GAME NOTES: The Clemson Tigers and Maryland Terrapins both carry three-game win streaks into tonight's ACC clash in College Park.
Clemson was completely dominant from start to finish in Saturday's 72-49 romp over Virginia. With the recent string of strong play, the Tigers have been able to move to 19-7 overall and 7-5 in league play, giving them a strong chance to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
As for Maryland, its recent string of success has enabled it to move to second place in the conference standings just a game back of Duke in the loss column. The Terps, who are 19-7 overall and 9-3 in ACC action, are coming off a hard- fought 76-74 win over Georgia Tech. That triumph enabled them to move to 13-1 at home this season.
Clemson beat Maryland by a 62-53 final on January 31st, but the Terps still own a commanding 86-49 lead in the all-time series.
Trevor Booker is a physical forward who brings 15.3 ppg and 8.2 rpg to the court for Clemson. Demontez Stitt provides 10.6 ppg as the only other double- digit scorer on the roster, and he is tops with 81 assists. The Tigers are generating 74.1 ppg while holding opponents to 62.8 ppg on 41 percent shooting from the field. In the 23-point romp over Virginia, Clemson shot 51.9 percent from the floor while holding the Cavaliers to 35 percent. A 12-5 edge in points from the foul line also helped the cause for the Tigers, who won easily despite not scoring a single fast-break point in the contest. Jerai Grant led the charge with 18 points, while Booker posted 14 points and eight boards.
Greivis Vasquez deserves serious consideration for ACC Player of the Year honors. The standout Maryland guard has led his team in scoring in six consecutive outings and is now averaging 18.8 ppg to go along with 161 assists. Vasquez gets help from Landon Milbourne who provides 13.3 ppg, as well as Eric Hayes who is scoring 10.7 ppg. Sean Mosley rounds out a foursome of double-digit scorers with 10.2 ppg. The Terps are scoring 78.8 ppg while holding opponents to 65.5 ppg on 37.4 percent field goal efficiency. In the two-point win over Georgia Tech last time out, Vasquez scored 18 points and handed out eight assists. Hayes tallied 15 points for Maryland, which committed just nine turnovers, enabling the club to overcome other shortcomings.
In front of the home crowd tonight, Vasquez will shine. Expect Maryland to take an early lead and cruise to victory.
