GAME NOTES: The 20th-ranked Temple Owls have been one of the nation's most consistent teams this season, and they welcome the Dayton Flyers to Philadelphia this evening for an Atlantic 10 Conference showdown.
Losses in two of the last three games have dropped the Flyers to 18-8 overall and 7-5 in A-10 action. The last six losses suffered by Dayton have come by four or fewer points, an incredible stat to say the least. The club is coming off a 73-71 setback at Duquesne on Sunday, and it is now 4-5 in true road affairs.
As for Temple, it can pull even with Richmond atop the A-10 standings with a victory over Dayton tonight. The Owls are currently riding a three-game win streak that has enabled them to improve to 22-5 overall and 10-2 in conference. They were pushed to overtime by local rival Saint Joseph's on Saturday, but escaped with a 75-67 triumph.
Temple owns a 14-11 series edge over Dayton, but the Flyers have won the last three meetings.
Chris Wright is the leading scorer for Dayton this season with 14.7 ppg on the strength of his 54.3 percent shooting from the field, and he is pulling down 7.2 rpg as well. Chris Johnson is the only other double-digit scorer in the fold with 12.5 ppg, and he is tops with 7.4 rpg. The club is generating 70.3 ppg while limiting opponents to 61.9 ppg on 39.6 percent field goal efficiency. In addition to the solid defense, the Flyers have been strong on the boards, outrebounding foes by nearly six boards per tilt. In the narrow loss to Duquesne last time out, Dayton turned the ball over 21 times, the most obvious contributing factor in the setback. Johnson scored 21 points in that affair, while Wright pitched in 15 points en route to becoming the 42nd player in program history with 1,000 career points.
The strength of the Temple team is clearly its play at the defensive end of the court, as it is limiting opponents to 57.8 ppg on 38.2 percent shooting from the floor, including 28.3 percent from three-point range. The Owls, who are scoring 66.1 ppg, are also outrebounding foes by 4.2 rpg. Ryan Brooks leads the team with 14.9 ppg, and Juan Fernandez checks in with 12.0 ppg. Lavoy Allen provides 11.4 ppg and 10.3 rpg for the Owls, who earned a 47-30 rebounding advantage over Saint Joseph's on Saturday while also limiting the Hawks to 35.1 percent shooting from the floor. The reason the game was so close was that the Owls hit six fewer three-pointers than their counterparts. Ramone Moore was tremendous in the win, as he shot 11-of-18 from the field en route to 24 points and nine rebounds.
Expect yet another victory for Temple, which is far from flashy buy a model of consistency. Because of their tenacious team defense, no one wants to play the Owls in the NCAA Tournament.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
