GAME NOTES: The Florida State Seminoles invade Chapel Hill this evening for an ACC clash with the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Florida State needs to win tonight to stay in the good graces of the NCAA Tournament selection committee. Sure, the team is an impressive 19-7 overall, but its 7-5 ACC mark isn't overwhelming by any means. The last two outings have resulted in victory for the Seminoles, including a 69-50 triumph over Virginia last week.
After a season to remember in 2008-09 when North Carolina won the national title, the current campaign has been one to forget. The Tar Heels have lost two straight and six of seven to fall to 3-9 in ACC play, overshadowing a mediocre 14-13 overall record. The team dropped a 71-67 decision to Boston College on Saturday, and it seems that only an ACC Tournament title will earn the Heels a ticket to the "Big Dance".
UNC owns a commanding 40-9 series lead over FSU, but the Seminoles beat the Tar Heels in the ACC Tournament last season.
Florida State has been idle for a full week, but it hopes to carry the momentum of the Virginia win into this game. In that affair, Chris Singleton paced four double-digit scorers for the Seminoles with 12 points. Luke Loucks added 11 points off the bench, while Ryan Reid and Xavier Gibson tallied 10 points apiece. FSU connected on 50 percent of its field goal attempts in the tilt, including a 7-of-14 effort from three-point range. Defensively, the Seminoles excelled, limiting the Cavaliers to 37.5 percent shooting. Overall this season, FSU is generating 70.5 ppg while allowing only 60.8 ppg to opponents on 36.9 percent shooting from the field. The club is also outrebounding teams by nearly six boards per contest. Center Solomon Alabi provides 12.3 ppg and 6.6 rpg, and he has also blocked 64 shots. As for Singleton, he adds 10.7 points and 7.5 caroms per contest.
Because of a recent injury to talented big man Ed Davis, North Carolina's Deon Thompson is the only active double-digit scorer on the roster. Thompson is netting 14.4 ppg to go along with 6.4 rpg, but he needs more help from a rather young and mediocre supporting cast. The Heels are generating just 67.2 ppg in ACC action while allowing 72.5 ppg to league foes. In the loss to Boston College last time out, Thompson scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds. John Henson posted 11 points for the Heels, who got 10 points from Marcus Ginyard. Unfortunately, UNC shot just 39.1 percent from the floor in the clash, including 1-of-8 from three-point range.
North Carolina will play with pride at home tonight and find a way to knock off Florida State. Expect Thompson to be the best player on the court.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
