GAME NOTES: Illinois State hopes to extend its current win streak, as the Redbirds play host to the Indiana State Sycamores in a Missouri Valley Conference showdown tonight at Redbird Arena.
Indiana State lost a tough one on Saturday, 60-59, on the road against Green Bay. The affair was a non-conference tussle, keeping the Sycamores' league record at 8-8, which is good for a fourth-place tie with both Creighton and Bradley.
Illinois State is coming off a 71-62 home victory over Morehead State on Saturday. The win was the Redbirds' fifth in a row, as well as the team's sixth straight at Redbird Arena. A victory tonight will guarantee Illinois State at least the third seed in next week's MVC Tournament.
Tonight's bout marks the 102nd meeting between these two teams, with Illinois State leading the series, 55-46. However, Indiana State has won the last four encounters.
Harry Marshall leads the way for Indiana State this season with his 13.9 ppg. Dwayne Lathan and Rashad Reed round out the double-digit performers for the Sycamores, averaging 12.0 and 10.0 ppg, respectively. The team fell short against Green Bay over the weekend, 60-59 -- a loss that prevented Indiana State from garnering a three-game win streak. Carl Richards missed a shot as time expired, causing the Sycamores to fall to 16-12 on the season. Koang Dolouny led the team with 14 points in the loss, while Reed dropped in 13. Aaron Carter added 12 points for Indiana State, while Richard tore down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Illinois State won its fifth consecutive game on Saturday, as Osiris Eldridge led all scorers with 26 points. He is averaging 15.7 ppg for the season to pace the club. Alex Rubin added 15 points in the victory over Morehead State, while Justin Clark and Dinma Odiakosa netted 10 points apiece. Odiakosa is second on the squad in scoring for the season, netting 12.4 ppg. The Redbirds better their opponents by more than six points per contest, averaging 70.5 ppg on 45.0 percent shooting from the floor, while defensively allowing 64.2 ppg on 42.4 percent shooting.
Illinois State is hoping to solidify a favorable spot in the upcoming MVC Tournament, and with its success at Redbird Arena this season expect them to hand the Sycamores their second straight setback.
