GAME NOTES: The Marquette Golden Eagles resume their three-game road trip tonight, as they take on the St. John's Red Storm in Big East action at Carnesecca Arena.
The Eagles began their crucial road swing on a high note, as they outlasted Cincinnati, 79-76, in overtime on Sunday. The win was the sixth in seven outings for red-hot Marquette, which is now 17-9 overall and making a strong push for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid. The Eagles are also 8-6 in the Big East and in competition for a top five finish.
On the flip side, SJU will likely need to win the Big East Tournament in order to go dancing. The Red Storm has started to build up some momentum for the league tourney, winning three of its last four outings, including a 74-58 triumph at South Florida on Saturday. SJU is still just 5-9 within the conference, but is only one game back of eighth place.
As far as the all-time series goes, Marquette holds an 11-5 lead over SJU and the Eagles won both meetings last season, including a 74-45 trouncing in the Big East Tournament.
Lazar Hayward sent the game into overtime on a three-pointer with 27.5 seconds left and then he tacked on five more points in the extra session to help Marquette get past Cincinnati over the weekend. Hayward finished the game with a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards, while Jimmy Butler and Darius Johnson-Odom both scored 20 points in the win. A versatile and gifted athlete, Hayward currently leads the Eagles in scoring (18.1 ppg), rebounding (8.1 rpg) and steals (46) for the season. Butler is next in order with 15.5 ppg and 6.6 rpg, while Johnson-Odom averages 12.7 ppg on the strength of 48.8 percent shooting from long distance.
The Red Storm shot a sizzling 58.7 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-10 showing from three-point land, as it handled USF over the weekend. SJU outscored USF at the foul line, 15-7, as well as holding a 34-26 advantage on the glass. D.J. Kennedy led the charge with a 17-point effort, while Paris Horne posted 11 points and four assists. A player that can do it all, Kennedy paces SJU with 14.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 3.0 apg and 32 steals for the season. Dwight Hardy gives him and the team some help off the bench, as he chips in with 10.6 ppg.
The Eagles have a few more explosive scorers and those extra options should give them the edge they need to pick up the victory tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
