GAME NOTES: Big 12 Conference doormats meet up at Hilton Coliseum tonight, as the Iowa State Cyclones play host to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Nebraska has fallen to last place in the Big 12 standings thanks to losses in six straight games, and 11 of its last 12 overall. Most recently, the Cornhuskers were dealt a 74-59 home loss from Missouri this past Saturday. Prior to that, Nebraska had played five straight games against nationally- ranked opponents.
The Cyclones have endured a similar stretch with losses in nine of their last 10 outings, including six straight. On Saturday, they fell to No. 22 Texas A&M, 60-56. Tonight's contest wraps up a three-game homestand for the Cyclones, who will play two of their final three games on the road.
These teams met back in January in Lincoln, where the Cyclones notched a 56-53 win. Nebraska still leads the all-time series, 130-101.
Despite watching Missouri reel off an 18-3 run midway through the first half, the Cornhuskers found themselves trailing by only two at halftime of Saturday's matchup. But Nebraska shot just 37.5 percent in the second stanza, including a 1-of-8 effort from beyond the arc as the Tigers pulled away. Nebraska's perimeter defense was a bit too generous throughout the contest, as Mizzou knocked down 11-of-19 threes. Ryan Anderson knocked down 6-of-9 threes for NU en route to a team-high 22 points, though he was the Huskers' only double-digit scorer. That has been a fairly consistent story line for the team this season, as Anderson averages 11.1 ppg and is the only one averaging double figures. The Huskers have held the opposition to 42.8 percent shooting from the floor, but without steady offensive production up and down the roster, they've often struggled to keep pace on the scoreboard.
While the Huskers have largely been a one-man show, the Cyclones have been a two-man show. Craig Brackins leads the team with 16.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest, while Marquis Gilstrap is registering 14.4 ppg and 9.3 rpg. Those two have started every game this season, and they have accounted for nearly half of the team's field-goal attempts (.443) on the year. Like Nebraska, the Cyclones tend to clamp down defensively -- they've held foes to 41.4 percent shooting from the floor -- but struggle to keep pace with teams that like to run the floor. Those struggles continued on Saturday against Texas A&M, as the Cyclones shot a season-low 32.2 percent from the floor, marking the fifth straight game they shot less than 40 percent. Gilstrap scored 15 points to share team-high scoring honors with Diante Garrett, while Brackins finished with 10 points and eight boards in the loss.
Points could be tough to come by when these two cellar-dwellers meet. That said, 11 of ISU's 13 wins have come at home, while Nebraska is just 1-8 on the road.
