GAME NOTES: The Charlotte 49ers will try to salvage the final contest on a three-game homestand, as they host the Saint Joseph's Hawks tonight in Atlantic 10 play at Halton Arena.
After ripping off seven straight wins, the 49ers sat atop the A-10 standings and had a solid resume for the NCAA Tournament. However, a current three-game losing skid has changed all of that, as Charlotte now trails four other teams in the A-10 and will likely need a major run to participate in the Big Dance. On Saturday, the 49ers were handled by Xavier, 81-67, in falling to 18-8 overall and 8-4 within the conference.
SJU meanwhile, gave nationally-ranked Temple a scare before dropping a 75-67 decision in overtime on Saturday. It marked the fourth loss in a row for the Hawks, who are 9-18 overall and just 3-10 in league play. To make matters worse, SJU now hits the road, where it has gone a dismal 1-10, including 0-6 against conference opponents.
This is just the eighth all-time meeting between SJU and Charlotte on the hardwood, with the Hawks holding a 5-2 edge in the series.
SJU shot a dismal 35.1 percent from the floor, including just a 2-of-8 showing in overtime, as it was outlasted by Temple over the weekend. It was a disappointing finish for the Hawks, who nearly won the game in regulation before allowing Temple's Ramone Moore to convert a tying layup with a second remaining. Darrin Govens led SJU in the setback with 21 points and six rebounds, while Garrett Williamson had 20 points and five boards. On the season, Govens leads the Hawks in scoring at 13.1 ppg and he also hands out 3.0 apg. Williamson has provided a solid second option at 12.1 ppg and 3.7 apg, while Idris HIlliard adds 10.2 ppg and 5.5 rpg.
Charlotte made just 36.5 percent of its field goals compared to a 52.0 percent effort by Xavier, as it was handled, 81-67, over the weekend. The 49ers didn't have much success from long range either, going just 6-of-21, and it was also outscored at the foul line, 23-15. Derrio Green scored 23 points and recorded five steals in the loss, while Shamari Spears logged 13 points and five boards. Spears is the team's leading scorer on the season at 16.4 ppg and he also rips down 6.2 rpg. Green is another scoring threat at 14.1 ppg and he is the team's best defender with 41 steals on the campaign.
The 49ers are in a little slump right now, but they should be able to end their winless drought against a SJU club that has struggled on the road this season.
