GAME NOTES: The Fordham Rams take another shot at notching their first Atlantic 10 win of the season, as they host the St. Bonaventure Bonnies tonight at Rose Hill Gym.
The Rams are currently 0-13 within the A-10 and have only three more cracks at avoiding a winless campaign. Most recently, Fordham was defeated by Rhode Island, 101-75, on Saturday in its second worst defensive performance of the season. The Rams, who allowed a season-high 108 points to Xavier on January 31st, have now fallen in 18 straight games.
The Bonnies meanwhile, were in action this past Sunday, when they scored a 77-66 victory at La Salle. The triumph ended a short two-game slide and pushed SBU to 11-14 overall and 4-8 within the conference.
In regard to the all-time series, Fordham owns a 16-13 edge over SBU, although the Bonnies prevailed, 72-61, in a meeting earlier this month, 72-61.
The Bonnies connected on 42.9 percent of their attempts from the floor and 8- of-18 from three-point range, as they defeated La Salle over the weekend. SBU also got the job done on defense, holding La Salle to just 35.2 percent shooting from the field, including only 4-of-21 from downtown. Andrew Nicholson led the charge with 24 points and eight boards, while Chris Matthews logged 21 points and six assists. On the season, Nicholson tops the roster in scoring (16.5 ppg) as well as rebounding (7.6 rpg) and Jonathan Hall ranks second to him with 12.8 ppg and 5.5 rpg. Matthews, a 37.3 percent three-point shooter, gets involved with 11.8 ppg for SBU.
Fordham was outscored 24-4 over the first six-plus minutes of the game and never recovered in a 101-75 loss at Rhode Island over the weekend. The Rams, who trailed 58-28 at the break, was outscored 21-0 from long range and had 14 turnovers that led to 25 points for Rhode Island. Chris Gaston was a bright spot in the loss with a double-double of 32 points and 10 rebounds, while Brenton Butler had 17 points. On the season, Gaston has been one of the few positives for Fordham and he averages a double-double with team highs of 18.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg. Butler is another solid scoring option at 16.0 ppg, although he is shooting a miserable 33.4 percent from the field.
Fordham has just been dismal this season, but with a big performance from Gaston and Butler, look for the Rams to surprise the Bonnies for the victory tonight.
