GAME NOTES: With the regular season winding down, the UNLV Runnin' Rebels are desperate to find their rhythm as they match up against the TCU Horned Frogs in a Mountain West Conference showdown at the Thomas & Mack Center tonight.
It was only a few weeks ago that the Rebels found themselves in the AP Poll for the second time this season, but the squad suffered three straight setbacks against the likes of New Mexico, San Diego State and Utah. On Saturday, UNLV set out to make a statement and did so with a resounding 70-39 win over Colorado State at home. The victory moved the Rebels to 8-5 in league play and 11-3 in Sin City this season.
As for the Horned Frogs, they've split their last four games and are coming off a lopsided 68-51 loss to San Diego State themselves eight days ago. TCU is in the bottom third of the MWC standings with a record of only 4-8, sporting a 12-15 mark overall.
The Rebels took the first meeting of the season in Fort Worth last month by a score of 79-70, which means UNLV now leads the all-time series with TCU by a count of 13-2.
The Horned Frogs have had more than enough time to figure out what happened to them against SDSU last week, but that doesn't mean the squad has come up with a solution by any means. TCU shot only 39.6 percent from the field in the meeting and was a mere 2-of-5 at the free-throw line, so clearly the team did not play physical enough to earn trips to the stripe. Ronnie Moss accounted for 15 points and five assists and Zvonko Buljan 12 points off the bench as the only players to score in double figures. Despite his sophomore status, Moss is by far the most proficient player on the roster at the moment for the Horned Frogs, not only leading the group in scoring with 14.4 ppg, but also ranking fourth in the nation this week with his 6.3 apg. Buljan, who has been coming off the bench of late, is responsible for 12.0 ppg and 8.5 rpg, but he is the antithesis of Moss with just 56 dishes and 89 turnovers in his 26 appearances.
The Rebels snapped their three-game slide in a big way over the weekend as they posted a commanding 31-point win against visiting Colorado State. In one of the most dramatic defensive efforts in recent memory, UNLV held the Rams to a mere 22 percent shooting from the floor and 6-of-18 beyond the arc, while Anthony Marshall made good on all five of his field goal attempts to finish with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Chace Stanback also logged 12 points, followed by Tre'Von Willis and Kendall Wallace with 11 points apiece. Take Willis (18.0 ppg) out of the equation and the Rebels are one of the more balanced offensive units in the conference right now as they generate 74.1 ppg. Oscar Bellfield (9.4 ppg) is one of a number of players capable of putting up double figures on any given night, but his value increases when you factor in his passing skills since he leads the team with 118 assists as the only player to start every game this season. Because of the efforts of guys like Bellfield, the Rebels sport a turnover margin (+4.3) that is 11th in the nation this week.
There is still time to make a move in the standings before the MWC Tournament begins, so every game is crucial for a team like the Rebels. Seeing as how TCU doesn't fare so well on the road these days, assume the Horned Frogs will be heading back to Texas with another defeat after tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
