GAME NOTES: The Arizona State Sun Devils resume their three-game road trip tonight, as they clash with the Stanford Cardinal in a Pac-10 tilt at Maples Pavilion.
The Sun Devils got their road swing underway this past Sunday, when they picked up a 73-69 win at rival Arizona. It marked the first time the program has won three straight in Tucson since 1983. Winners of three straight overall, ASU remains just a half game back of California for the top spot in the Pac-10 at 9-5. The Sun Devils will cap this road trip with a visit to Berkeley and the Golden Bears on Saturday.
Stanford meanwhile, is gearing up for a late-season run, as it has won two straight and three of its past four outings. The two most recent victories, including a 65-55 decision versus Oregon State on Saturday, even came on the road, where the Cardinal had been 0-10 previously. Now at 7-8 within the conference, Stanford returns back home, where it has gone 5-1 in Pac-10 play.
As far as the all-time series goes, Stanford leads ASU by a 38-29 count, although the Sun Devils trounced Stanford, 88-70, in the first meeting of the season.
The Sun Devils shot a blistering 66.7 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of regulation, as they held off Arizona for a 73-69 victory on Sunday. ASU also had success from beyond the arc, finishing the game 11-of-20. Ty Abbott made 5-of-8 long-range buckets on his way to 28 points, while Rihards Kuksiks posted 17 points and six boards. With his effort, Abbott is now the team's leading scorer at 12.5 ppg and he is shooting 44.2 percent from downtown. Kuksiks, a 39.2 percent three-point threat, follows tightly with 12.1 ppg, while Derek Glasser contributes 10.1 ppg and a team-high 5.0 apg.
Stanford dropped in 47.9 percent of its attempts from the floor and 9-of-18 from three-point range, as it pushed past Oregon State on Saturday. The Cardinal also converted 10-of-13 free-throw chances, in addition to holding a 32-29 edge on the boards. Landry Fields led the charge with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Jeremy Green scored 15 points on 5-of-10 three-pointers. For the season, Fields not only leads the Cardinal in scoring, but the entire Pac-10 with an average of 22.2 ppg. He also tops the roster in rebounding (8.7 rpg) and steals (45), to go with 2.9 apg. Green is the team's best option at the perimeter and the 40.3 percent three-point shooter checks in with 17.5 ppg.
The Cardinal are starting to heat up now and with Fields and Green leading the charge, look for Stanford to continue its run with an upset of ASU tonight.
