GAME NOTES: The California Golden Bears will try to maintain their narrow lead atop the Pac-10 standings tonight, as they host the Arizona Wildcats at Haas Pavilion.
The Pac-10 race has been wide open all season long, but for the most part, California has held the top spot. The Bears though, are just a half game up on Arizona State at the moment, as they sit at 10-5. The team has won four of its last five games to maintain its edge and that includes a 64-49 besting of Oregon on Saturday. California has been especially tough at home this season, boasting a 13-1 ledger.
As for the Wildcats, they too were in the thick of the Pac-10 race until a recent slide dropped them to 7-7 within the conference. Arizona capped off an unsuccessful three-game homestand on Sunday with a 73-69 loss to rival Arizona State. It was the second straight and fourth setback in five games for the Wildcats, who are now just 13-13 overall.
Arizona leads the head-to-head series with California, 52-27, and that includes a 76-72 victory in last month's meeting.
The Wildcats just could not come up with a big stand in the second half, as they allowed Arizona State to shoot a scorching 66.7 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of a 73-69 setback on Sunday. Arizona was also outdone from beyond the arc, where it went just 7-of-16 compared to an 11- of-20 effort by Arizona State. Nic Wise paced the team in defeat with 18 points, while Derrick Williams had 15 points. Williams currently paces the club in scoring at 15.4 ppg and he is also ripping down a team-high 6.8 rpg. Wise nips at his heels with 15.0 ppg and he tops the club in assists (3.4 apg) as well as steals (45). Kyle Fogg and Jamelle Horne round out the double- figure scorers with 10.5 and 10.0 ppg, respectively.
After a dismal first half, Cal shot 57.1 percent from the floor, including 6- of-12 from downtown, over the final 20 minutes for a 64-49 win over Oregon on Saturday. The Bearcats, who outscored Oregon 40-26 after halftime, controlled the boards, 34-28, and forced 13 turnovers as well. Theo Robertson and Jerome Randle both tallied 16 points in the win, while Patrick Christopher had 10 and seven boards. A Pac-10 Player of the Year candidate, Randle tops the roster in scoring (19.2 ppg) and assists (4.4 apg) and he also shoots 40.9 percent from long distance. Christopher is another solid scorer at 15.9 ppg and he is the team's best defender with 47 steals to his credit. Theo Robertson tacks on 13.9 ppg and 4.7 rpg, while Jamal Boykin adds 11.2 ppg and a team-high 6.5 rpg to the rotation.
California has it sights set on a Pac-10 title and it should be able to take one step closer with a win over a fading Arizona club tonight.
