GAME NOTES: The Boise State Broncos try to dig themselves out of the basement in the Western Athletic Conference standings as they challenge the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs tonight at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston.
BSU, which entered the week tied with Hawaii in last place with just two wins in 12 conference outings, has not played a WAC foe since losing to Nevada in overtime back on February 13th in Reno. Most recently the team was taken out by UC Davis in an 82-74 final last weekend, representing the squad's fourth loss in the last five games.
As for the Bulldogs, currently tied with the Wolf Pack for third place in the WAC at 8-4, they bounced back from their loss to league-leading Utah State a week ago (67-61) by slipping by Northeastern on the road on Saturday afternoon in a thrilling 70-67 final. The victory kept the team's trend of alternating wins and losses, now stretching over nine games.
LaTech won the first meeting of the season last month with a 79-64 triumph at Taco Bell Arena, which means the all-time series now stands at 11-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The Broncos shot only 7-of-24 behind the three-point line and 9-of-16 at the charity stripe over the weekend against UC Davis, more than enough to keep the squad out of the win column again. Daequon Montreal was responsible for 15 points and seven rebounds, followed by Paul Noonan with 14 points and Kurt Cunningham and Robert Arnold with 13 points apiece. Ike Okoye, who tallied just six points in 20 minutes of action, remains the top scorer for the program with his 13.1 ppg and he is also first on the glass with close to eight and a half rebounds per contest. La'Shard Anderson (10.2 ppg) shoots just 36.5 percent from the floor and 28.4 percent out on the perimeter, which means he might be better off focusing on passing the ball since it has resulted in his team-best 103 assists through 27 games.
Northeastern led by a score of 63-55 with under six minutes to play on their home floor on Saturday, but after Magnum Rolle tied the game at 67-67 on a free throw it was left to DeAndre Brown to put the visitors over the top with a three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining. Brown finished with 18 points for the Bulldogs, matching the output of Jamel Guyton who knocked down all three of his three-point tries. Rolle contributed 17 points, but just three rebounds which is rather unusual for him these days. Even though he was an afterthought against the Huskies, Kyle Gibson is still tops in the scoring department with his 20.3 ppg and has accounted for 90 assists for the squad. Rolle (14.8 ppg) and Olu Ashaolu (10.7 ppg) are responsible for the action in the paint with a combined 17 rebounds per game at the moment.
Boise State has been roughed up on the road this season and the Bulldogs have been nearly unbeatable at home, so this meeting should result in another win for LaTech.
