GAME NOTES: The Appalachian State Mountaineers host the Chattanooga Mocs tonight in a Southern Conference battle at the Holmes Center.
The Mountaineers were in action just this past Monday, when they picked up a 58-54 win at Elon. With the win, ASU improved to 11-5 in the SoCon and wrapped up the North Division's top seed in next month's tournament. Winners of two straight and six of their past seven outings, the Mountaineers are now 18-11 overall.
On the reverse side, Chattanooga is third in the North Division at 6-10, but three other teams trail the Mocs by just one game. On Monday, the team snapped out of its funk and produced a 78-73 win over Davidson. The triumph ended a five-game slide and improved the Mocs to 14-15 overall.
The Mocs lead the head-to-head series with ASU, 40-27, and that includes an 85-80 victory just last month.
Chattanooga connected on 46.4 percent of its attempts from the field and 8- of-21 from three-point land, as it defeated Davidson on Monday. The Mocs also outscored Davidson at the foul line, 41-35, in addition to holding a 41-35 edge on the boards. Ricky Taylor led the way with 22 points and three assists, while Ty Patterson had 20 points and eight rebounds. Patterson currently heads the team in scoring with an average of 15.2 ppg and he is also collecting 5.1 rpg. Taylor tacks on 11.4 ppg for the Mocs, who are generating 69.3 ppg as a team this season.
Donald Sims poured in 25 points and snared six boards to help the Mountaineers past Elon on Monday. Josh Hunter and Isaac Butts added 10 points apiece and they also combined for 18 of the team's 46 rebounds. ASU dominated the boards, 46-29, and that is nothing new considering the team it outrebounding opponents by 7.1 rpg for the season. Sims isn't much of a rebounder himself, but he is an elite scorer, tallying 20.1 ppg on the strength of 42.3 percent shooting from long distance. Kellen Brand is a distant second at 10.3 ppg, and Butts is the team's leading rebounder with 8.8 rpg.
The Mountaineers are on a roll and backed by another big performance from Sims, expect them to emerge with the victory tonight.
