GAME NOTES: The last-place team in the West Coast Conference tries to close out the last week of the regular season with some positive results as the San Diego Toreros welcome the Loyola Marymount Lions to Jenny Craig Pavilion.
USD has just two league wins in 12 tries this season and has dropped five straight decisions. The squad was held below 50 points for the second time in the last four games in a 61-49 setback versus Saint Mary's-CA last week.
As for the Lions, currently fifth in the standings at an even 6-6, they've won two in a row and four of their last five games. Last Saturday, the team defeated the University of Portland in overtime, 77-69, at home which means the team's nine victories at home this season are the most since the 1998-99 campaign.
A 68-65 win by the Lions in the first meeting of the season last month provided LMU with a slight 40-39 advantage in the all-time series.
Vernon Teel filled out his stat line with 24 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals as he led the Lions to the overtime win against the Portland Pilots last week. Also scoring in double figures for the home team were Ashley Hamilton with 12 points and both Jarred DuBois and Larry Davis with 10 points apiece, as the squad knocked down almost 50 percent from the field overall and was a perfect 7-of-7 at the free-throw line in the bonus session. Drew Viney, the team's leading scorer on the season with his 16.4 ppg, was held to just six points as he let the rest of his teammates do most of the work. Teel does a little bit of everything for the group these days from his 15.0 ppg, to 6.0 apg and 5.6 rpg, not to mention coming up with a team-best 53 steals as well.
San Diego stuck around for the first half against the Gaels the last time out, but after the break the Toreros made just 1-of-8 shots behind the three-point line and 1-of-3 at the charity stripe, clearing the way for SMC to take the double-digit win on the road. The only player for San Diego to score in double figures was Brandon Johnson who delivered 15 points, but he did so only after missing all five of his three-point tries and hitting 6-of-15 from the floor overall. Overall this season Johnson, who missed three games, registers a team-best 14.9 ppg, even though he shoots just 36.6 percent from the floor. Unfortunately, when it comes to conference games his production dips to 13.7 ppg and the team overall finds itself struggling to come up with 58.3 ppg, based on the fact that the Toreros are shooting only 39.9 percent from the floor and are getting beat on the glass by an average of 7.5 rpg.
With little incentive to make a strong finish to the regular season, don't expect to see anything out of the ordinary for the Toreros tonight as LMU grabs another conference win.
