GAME NOTES: The top two teams in the Ohio Valley Conference come together tonight, as the Murray State Racers tussle with the Morehead State Eagles at Johnson.
This game isn't nearly as big as many thought it would be prior to the season, as the Racers have already captured the regular-season crown and are trying to become just the fourth team in OVC history to go undefeated. Murray State, which is 16-0 in conference play, took a break from league action on Saturday and posted a 75-66 victory over Morgan State. It marked the team's 17th win in a row, tying Butler for the longest active streak in the nation. The Racers are now 26-3 overall and just three wins shy of tying the school record for victories in a season.
On the flip side, the Eagles are already locked in as the second-seed for the upcoming OVC Tournament, as they sit at a solid 13-3 within the conference. Morehead State, which won the league tourney a year ago, recently suffered a 71-62 setback at Illinois State on Saturday in a non-conference bout. Now at 19-9 overall, the Eagles return back home, where they have gone a perfect 7-0 against OVC opponents.
In terms of the all-time series, Murray State holds a 102-45 advantage over Morehead State and the Racers coasted past the Eagles, 86-56, in the first meeting of the season in early December.
The Racers had their way down low last game, outscoring Morgan State in the paint, 30-16, and holding a 47-35 advantage on the boards of a 75-66 triumph. Murray State also shot 43.1 percent from the field, including an 8-of-20 showing from long distance. Ivan Aska led the charge with 17 points and six rebounds, while Isaiah Canaan turned in 14 points and five assists. Three other players also reached double figures for the Racers, who are as balanced as any team around, with five players averaging double digits for the season. B.J. Jenkins heads the group with 10.6 ppg and he is also the team's best defender with 58 steals to his credit. Tony Easley and Aska tack on 10.5 ppg apiece and they are combining for 10.7 rpg as well. Thomas follows at 10.3 ppg and Canaan chips in with 10.0 ppg coming off the bench.
Morehead State went just 9-of-18 at the foul line compared to a 22-of-30 effort by Illinois State, as it suffered a 71-62 setback on Saturday. The Eagles shot a modest 40.7 percent from the floor, meanwhile, Illinois State hit on 48.8 percent of its field goals. Kenneth Faried guided the team in defeat with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Steve Peterson and Demonte Harper chipped in with 11 points. On the season, Faried leads the way in scoring at 16.9 ppg and he is one of the top rebounders around, ripping down 13.3 rpg. Maze Stallworth follows with 12.8 ppg and 5.1 rpg, while Harper pitches in with 12.3 ppg.
Murray State is on a major run right now and is just two wins away from a perfect campaign. Standing in its way however, is a talented Morehead State club that won't be intimidated. As a matter of fact, expect Faried and Stallworth to control the game down low and lift the Eagles to the victory tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
