GAME NOTES: A couple of Western Athletic Conference teams trying to get back into the win column after suffering non-conference setbacks last week clash at The Event Center tonight, as the San Jose State Spartans entertain the Nevada Wolf Pack.
Nevada, which is 8-4 in league action this season, had been riding along with a three-game win streak before facing off against Missouri State on the road last Saturday, a meeting that resulted in a narrow 62-60 setback for the Wolf Pack. With the decision, Nevada is now only 3-8 in true road games in 2009-10.
As for the Spartans, they were sent to their fifth loss in the last six games on Monday night in a 90-88 outcome against Seattle University. But even with the decision, SJSU is still a strong 9-3 at home this season.
Even though SJSU owns a 47-45 advantage in the all-time series, it is the Wolf Pack that has won five straight over the Spartans, including a 96-67 romp in Reno in the first meeting of this season.
Luke Babbitt logged another double-double over the weekend with his 16 points and game-high 12 rebounds versus Missouri State on the road, but the big man shot just 5-of-18 from the floor and the team just 7-of-14 at the free-throw line in what became a two-point decision. Armon Johnson accounted for 15 points and four assists as he and Babbitt combined to make 3-of-4 beyond the arc. Playing nearly 37 minutes per game this season Babbitt is showing why he should be considered as the top player in the conference with his 21.6 ppg and 9.7 rpg overall. But if it were only WAC games that were taken into consideration, Babbitt would have an even stronger case since he is depositing 24.0 ppg in those outings and shooting 44.4 percent behind the three-point line. Also playing well in conference games are Johnson and Brandon Fields with 16.3 and 12.6 ppg, respectively, the former responsible for six assists per game as well.
Adrian Oliver sank all but one of his 18 attempts at the free-throw line on Monday night, finishing with a game-high 35 points but even that was not enough as the Spartans bowed in the two-point decision against Seattle University. Robert Owens added 20 points, Mac Peterson 18 and Chris Oakes 10 points and four blocked shots, while fifth starter Justin Graham logged five points, five rebounds, five steals and seven assists, but he was also charged with nine turnovers. Oliver, who had a 39-point effort against Louisiana Tech earlier in the season, has started all 26 games for the Spartans in 2009-10 and has been an offensive factor in nearly every one of them with his 22.8 ppg. In addition to shooting 42.4 percent behind the three-point line Oliver, who clears 5.5 rpg, has also made good on 166-of-188 (.883) at the free-throw line and that has helped to give SJSU 98 more points at the stripe than the competition.
The matchup of Oliver and Babbitt is sure to be an exciting one, but neither player can do it all on his own and since Nevada has the better supporting cast, expect to see the visitors make it into the win column again tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
