Samford (11-17) at Western Carolina (19-10)

GAME NOTES: The Samford Bulldogs will be looking to bolster their postseason fortunes when they take on the Western Carolina Catamounts in a Southern Conference North Division joust at the Ramsey Center.

Western Carolina was a 74-72 loser at Kent State on Saturday in a BracketBusters game. The Catamounts have dropped two straight and five of their last six and now stand at 19-10 overall and 9-7 in the SoCon's North Division, two games behind Appalachian State. While the Catamounts could technically tie for the division title, they are slotted into the division's second seed for the conference tournament, having lost twice to Appalachian State this season.

Samford fell on its homecourt, 83-77 to Georgia Southern on Monday night. The Bulldogs have split their last four games, and now stand at 11-17 overall and 5-11 in the North Division. Samford is currently locked in a three-way tie for fourth place in the division with one game remaining after tonight. Samford is 4-8 on the road this season.

This is just the fifth meeting all-time between the two schools. Western Carolina leads the series 3-1, including a 62-50 win over the Bulldogs in Birmingham on January 30th.

Jeffrey Merritt scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Bulldogs in their loss on Monday. Samford also got 15 points from Bryan Friday, as well as 14 points apiece from Trey Montgomery and Kaylin Johnson. Josh Davis added 10 points in the setback. Davis leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 12.9 ppg, hitting 42.8 percent from the floor. Montgomery is providing 11.3 ppg, while shooting 47.7 percent from the floor. Friday is also in double figures at 10.2 points per contest. Merritt is the leading rebounder on the ballclub at a pedestrian 4.4 rpg. Davis is next at 4.1 boards per contest. Although they're shooting a respectable 45.8 percent from the floor, the Bulldogs are averaging just 58.4 ppg.

Richie Gordon scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Western Carolina in the loss at Kent State. Brandon Giles and Mike Williams provided 11 points each. The Catamounts led by four with 3:48 left in the game, but couldn't hold on. Western Carolina was just 8-of-27 from three-point range for the evening. Giles leads the Catamounts in scoring at 12.0 ppg, shooting 41.5 percent from the floor. Jake Robinson is next at 11.9 ppg, while Williams is also in double figures at 10.6 ppg. Harouna Mutombo is the Catamounts' leading rebounder at just 4.9 rpg, while Waginger is third in the conference in assists at 4.5 apg. The Catamounts are scoring 74.9 ppg and shooting an even 45.0 percent from the floor, but just 63.8 percent from the foul line however.

For all their difficulties of late, Western Carolina has the more talented team and should be successful in this encounter.
