GAME NOTES: The 18th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs will attempt to claim at least a share of the West Coast Conference regular-season title tonight, as they host the Santa Clara Broncos at the McCarthy Athletic Center in Spokane, Washington.
Santa Clara's winning percentage is much higher on the road this season than at home, a claim that can't be made by many teams in the nation. Still, it should be pointed out that the Broncos haven't done much winning at all, as they are 11-18 overall and 3-9 in conference. Two of the last three outings have ended in defeat, including a 71-68 overtime setback to San Francisco last Saturday.
As for Gonzaga, it will secure the top seed in the upcoming WCC Tournament and a piece of its 10th consecutive regular-season championship with a win. The Bulldogs have won five of their last six games to move to 22-5 overall, including 10-2 in conference. They are coming off a 72-54 romp over Pepperdine last Saturday and now return home where they are 10-1 this season.
Gonzaga earned a rather narrow 71-64 win over Santa Clara back on January 28th, and the Bulldogs own a 43-30 series advantage over the Broncos.
Santa Clara is scoring 65.0 ppg this season on a lackluster 41.1 percent shooting effort from the floor, and the team is allowing 69.2 ppg to its opponents. Kevin Foster only played six games this season, but the fact that he averaged nearly 20 ppg in those outings suggests that the Broncos would have enjoyed much more success in 2009-10 if the standout was a regular in the lineup. The leading active scorer for Santa Clara is Marc Trasolini with 14.1 ppg, and he is pulling down 6.3 rpg to go along with 48 blocks. Robert Smith adds 12.7 ppg for the Broncos, who got 17 points from Trasolini in the heart- breaking loss to San Francisco. Ben Dowdell added 13 points from Santa Clara, which shot 36.2 percent from the field against the Dons, including 4-of-22 from three-point range.
Gonzaga is shooting 50.2 percent from the floor in West Coast Conference bouts, and the team is generating 77.9 ppg overall on 49 percent field goal efficiency. Defensively, the club is limiting foes to 67.5 ppg on 40.7 percent shooting. Matt Bouldin continues to pace the squad with 16.5 ppg, and Elias Harris checks in with 15.3 ppg. Steven Gray provides 13.3 ppg, and Robert Sacre adds 10.0 ppg. The Zags shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the romp over Pepperdine last time out, and they held the Waves to 27.1 percent shooting. That differential enabled Gonzaga to overcome a 48-36 rebounding deficit. Bouldin scored 18 points and handed out five assists, and Harris tallied 13 points. Sacre and Gray contributed 12 points apiece.
Mark Few's Bulldogs have been dominant for a decade. With that said, Gonzaga is far superior to Santa Clara and will win easily tonight.
