GAME NOTES: The Eastern Kentucky Colonels will try to establish a new school record for home wins tonight, as they entertain the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks in Ohio Valley Conference play at McBrayer Arena.
The Colonels have gone an outstanding 14-1 at home this season and that includes a 77-57 trouncing of Winthrop in non-conference play on Saturday. With at least two games remaining at McBrayer Arena, EKU needs just one more victory to set a new school record for home wins in a single season. The Colonels are also playing for homecourt advantage in the OVC Tournament, as they currently sit in a tie for third place at 10-6. The top four teams in the conference get to host a quarterfinal bout in the league tourney.
UTM meanwhile, is one of two clubs that will not be participating in the eight-team conference tourney, as it owns the worst mark in the OVC at 1-15. The Skyhawks are currently mired in a four-game slide and that includes a 68-52 setback at Ball State on Saturday. That means UTM is now 0-14 on the road, and the team will wrap up its season at Morehead State on Saturday.
For the all-time series, EKU owns a 22-14 record against UTM and the Colonels have won the last six meetings at McBrayer Arena.
The Skyhawks shot a dismal 34.8 percent from the floor, including just 2-of-16 from three-point land, as they were handled by Ball State over the weekend. Marquis Weddle netted 15 points to lead the team in the loss, while Benzor Simmons posted 10 points. For the season, Weddle averages a team-best 16.2 ppg, although he is shooting only 38.7 percent from the floor. Simmons is next in order at 13.3 ppg and he also collects 5.3 rpg, while Reuben Clayton provides 11.9 ppg for the Skyhawks.
The Colonels couldn't miss on Saturday, hitting on 60.9 percent of their attempts from the field and 11-of-24 from beyond the arc in a 77-57 rout of Winthrop. Leading the way was Josh Taylor, who poured in 20 points and tore down six caroms. Justin Stommes added 15 points and five helpers, while Dayvon Ellis and Papa Oppong both finished with 14 points. For the season, Stommes tops the roster in scoring at 14.3 ppg and he is also knocking down 41.2 percent of his attempts from long range. Taylor, a 39.5 percent three-point shooter, is second in line at 13.7 ppg, while Oppong chips in with 11.0 ppg. Oppong is also a terrific long-range shooter, making good on 45.3 percent of his chances.
EKU is the clear choice here, as it is playing at home against a UTM club that is short on talent.
