GAME NOTES: The Tennessee State Tigers will put their four-game Ohio Valley Conference winning streak on the line tonight, as they take on the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks at the Show Me Center.
After losing six games in a row versus OVC foes, the Tigers responded with four straight triumphs against league members. On Saturday however, TSU took a break from its league slate and suffered a 79-73 loss at Central Michigan. It was yet another setback on the road for the Tigers, who are now a dismal 2-14 as the visitor this season.
SEMO meanwhile, has dropped six straight and nine of its past 10 outings. On Saturday, the Redhawks were handed a 69-53 defeat by Miami-Ohio in a non- conference affair. Now at 7-21 overall, SEMO returns back to OVC play, where it owns a record of just 3-13.
For the all-time series, TSU holds a slim 19-17 edge over the Redhawks, although SEMO won the first meeting this year, 74-66 in December.
TSU has struggled on defense this season and that showed last Saturday, when it allowed CMU to shoot 48.9 percent from the field, including 8-of-18 from downtown, in a 79-73 setback. The Tigers actually led 44-38 at the break, but made just 34.6 percent of their field goals over the final 20 minutes en route to the loss. Jeremiah Crutcher guided TSU with 21 points off the bench, while Wil Peters posted 19 points. Jacquan Nobles however, was limited to just six points and that is well below his season average of 11.2 ppg. Robert Covington trails Nobles with 10.2 ppg and he also pulls in 6.9 rpg for TSU, which is scoring 67.9 ppg, but allowing 74.4 ppg on the season.
SEMO shot a miserable 32.7 percent from the floor and coughed up the ball 14 times in a 69-53 loss at Miami over the weekend. The Redhawks had just eight assists as a team and were also dominated on the glass, 42-31. Marland Smith was the lone bright spot for SEMO, as he poured in 28 points on 6-of-13 shooting from long distance. With that effort, he is now close to averaging double figures on the season at 9.9 rpg. That numbers is also good for second, trailing only Anthony Allison's team-high 10.2 ppg average.
The Tigers have played well of late and should be able to overcome their road woes to clip the struggling Redhawks tonight.
