GAME NOTES: THe Utah State Aggies play their final road game of the regular season tonight as they tangle with the Hawaii Warriors in Western Athletic Conference action at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
The Aggies, who are all alone in first place in the WAC standings at 11-2, are cruising along with a 12-game win streak that is tied for the fifth-longest run in school history at the moment. The current streak is also fourth-longest in the nation behind Murray State and Butler (17 games) and top-ranked Kansas (13 games).
Last Saturday, like many programs, the Aggies took a break from conference play and tackled Wichita State in a 68-58 final. The team's most recent WAC outing was eight days ago, a 67-61 home win over Louisiana Tech.
As for the Warriors, tied with Boise State for last place in the conference with a mere two wins in 12 tries, they surrendered to Cal Poly in a lopsided 102-89 final on Saturday night, the team's eight consecutive setback and the 10th in 11 outings overall.
The Aggies crushed Hawaii in the first meeting of the season in Logan, logging a 98-54 victory to kick-start the current win streak for USU. As a result of that decision, one that stands as the largest conference win in school history, USU now owns a 9-4 edge in the all-time series, even though the Aggies have won just once in four attempts out on the island.
Offense was at a premium, at least in the first half last Saturday, as Utah State posted a 30-20 advantage over the Shockers and eventually claimed the 10-point home win. Tai Wesley tallied 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, followed by Nate Bendall and Brady Jardine with 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Aggies made good on 51 percent from the field and 5-of-10 behind the three-point line in the meeting. What makes this USU team so remarkable is that it doesn't have a single stand-out player who dominates games, but rather a cast of performers who are willing to do whatever it takes to get the Aggies into the win column. Wesley (13.3 ppg), Jared Quayle (12.0 ppg) and Bendall (10.7 ppg) have pushed the team to a scoring advantage of 13 ppg and what really sets this group apart from the rest of the WAC is that the Aggies are shooting 77.0 percent at the free-throw line, tops in the nation.
Roderick Flemings lit up the scoreboard for 39 points, the most by a Hawaii player in the history of the Stan Sheriff Center and fourth-highest in program history overall, yet he and the Warriors still fell by 13 points to the visiting Cal Poly Mustangs. Petras Balocka came off the bench to register 23 points and 16 rebounds, but still there was no way to keep the Warriors from running their winless streak to eight games, which is the longest since the team dropped 12 in a row back in 1987-88. Flemings was named the WAC Player of the Week for his efforts, yet he is still scoring just 16.7 ppg on the season. The team as a whole is putting up a modest 68.8 ppg overall, but when it comes to conference meetings that number plummets to 61.5 ppg. As a result, WAC foes are outscoring the Warriors by an average of 11 ppg and holding Hawaii to a mere 24.5 percent shooting behind the three-point line.
As long as the Aggies don't get too over-confident, this is another meeting that should land in the win column for USU even though it is on the road.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
