GAME NOTES: Horizon League foes will clash in Chicago tonight, as the UIC Flames take on the Green Bay Phoenix.
Wins in two straight games and four of the last five outings have enabled the Phoenix to improve to 19-10 overall and 10-6 in league action. Sure, the regular-season title is out of the question, as Butler ran away with the Horizon, but Green Bay has certainly improved its seeding for the upcoming league tournament. Last Saturday, the Phoenix showed a great deal of toughness in posting a 60-59 victory over Indiana State.
Illinois-Chicago enters this game on an emotional high, as a late jumper pushed the team to an 82-80 victory over Evansville last Saturday. That victory halted a three-game slide for the Flames, who are a lowly 2-14 in Horizon League action and 7-20 overall. The only reason for confidence tonight is that six of the team's seven victories this season have come at home.
Green Bay crushed UIC by an 85-59 final back in early December, and the Phoenix own a 46-33 advantage in the all-time series.
Rahmon Fletcher is the leading scorer for Green Bay this season, as he is netting 16.3 ppg to go along with 49 steals. Bryquis Perine, who is tops with 109 assists, checks in with 13.1 ppg, and Troy Cotton rounds out a trio of double-digit scorers with 11.4 ppg on the strength of his 40.7 percent shooting from three-point range. The Phoenix are generating 68.0 ppg while allowing 66.5 ppg to opponents. Fletcher scored 22 points for Green Bay in the victory over Indiana State last weekend, and Rian Pearson added 17 points off the bench. As for Perine, he tallied 15 points for the Phoenix, who limited the Sycamores to 38.2 percent shooting from the floor. That strong defense enabled the squad to overcome a 43-27 rebounding disadvantage.
Robo Kreps was the hero for UIC against Evansville last time out, as it was his jumper that won the game. Kreps finished with 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field, as he was certainly efficient for a change. Spencer Stewart added 20 points, and Jeremy Buttell contributed a dozen. The Flames connected on 54.9 percent of their field goal attempts and were outscored 27-19 from the foul line. Kreps is scoring 14.7 ppg this season, but his 34.1 percent shooting from the field is in dire need of improvement. Zavion Neely adds 11.9 ppg, and Buttell adds 11.9 ppg as well to complement his 7.4 rpg. The Flames are posting only 61.4 ppg on 38.3 percent shooting, the most obvious reason for their poor record.
Expect Green Bay to complete the season sweep of UIC, although this contest figures to be more competitive than the first meeting between the two.
