GAME NOTES: Horizon League foes are slated to collide at the Gentile Center tonight, as the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers welcome the Milwaukee Panthers to town.
Milwaukee carried a modest three-game win streak into last Saturday's non- conference matchup with Niagara, but the home team saw that streak halted in an 85-79 loss to the Purple Eagles. The Panthers are now 16-13 overall, and they have split their 16 league affairs to date.
As for Loyola, it is 14-13 overall, but that mark is overshadowed a bit by a dismal 5-11 conference record. The Ramblers have lost their last two games and four of the last five, including a 78-58 beating at Creighton as part of BracketBusters Saturday.
Loyola won the first matchup of the season between these two teams, 69-64, but Milwaukee owns a 24-19 lead in the all-time series.
The Panthers are generating 69.5 ppg this season while limiting opponents to 67.9 ppg. Ricky Franklin leads the Panthers with 14.9 ppg to go along with 4.0 apg. James Eayrs provides 12.7 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer on the roster, and he is tops with 5.7 rpg. Franklin scored 22 points and dished out seven assists, while Eayrs added 14 points. Anthony Hill contributed 12 points for the Panthers, who shot 54.4 percent from the field in the setback. Unfortunately, they were outscored 17-7 from the foul line and committed four more turnovers than did Niagara.
Terrance Hill leads a rather weak Loyola offensive attack with 11.7 ppg despite his 38.6 percent shooting from the floor. Walt Gibler checks in with 10.9 ppg, and Geoff McCammon adds 10.7 ppg. The Ramblers are generating 64.7 ppg while permitting 66.2 ppg to foes. Gibler scored 15 points for Loyola in the ugly loss to Creighton last time out. Hill tallied 12 points, and McCammon added 11 more for the Ramblers, who shot a poor 37 percent from the field, including 3-of-19 from three-point range. A high total of 16 turnovers certainly didn't help the cause.
Expect the Panthers to earn a split of the season series with the Ramblers. This game will go down to the wire.
