GAME NOTES: Tournament implications are heavy in tonight's Big Sky Conference bout between the Idaho State Bengals and the Portland State Vikings at the Stott Center.
Idaho State is currently 4-10 in league play and needs a victory this evening to remain in the hunt for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament. Idaho State has lost six of its last seven games however, and is coming off an 89-64 setback to Weber State.
As for the Vikings, they currently sit in the sixth spot of the conference and with a victory will secure that place and more importantly a chance in the league tournament. However, the team heads into this game stuck in a five-game slide, which includes a 64-61 setback to Northern Colorado in its last matchup.
Earlier this season the Bengals grabbed a thrilling, 88-80 overtime victory over Portland State. Despite the loss, the Vikings still own a 23-14 edge over Idaho State in the all-time series.
The Bengals shot 44.9 percent from the floor in their last matchup, but finished with just 64 points in a setback to Weber State. Idaho State finished just 5-of-15 from behind the arc, and only 15-of-21 from the foul line. Amorrow Morgan led the way in the loss with 17 points, while Austin Kilpatrick posted 12 points. Todd Starks added 11 points off the bench, while Demetrius Monroe chipped in with 10 points and eight boards. Morgan has been the top player on the floor for Idaho State, as the guard is netting 16.7 ppg. Broderick Gilchrest is contributing 16.1 ppg for Idaho State, which as a whole is producing just 66.4 ppg on the season.
The Vikings have been very dangerous at the offensive end of the floor, as the team is producing 78.0 ppg, behind a 47.7 percent shooting effort. Dominic Waters is leading the team with 18.7 ppg and 132 assists, while Jamie Jones is netting 14.1 ppg, to go along with a team-best 8.0 rpg. Unfortunately the last time the Vikings were on the floor the team finished with just 61 points in a loss to Northern Colorado. Portland State shot 48.0 percent from the floor and was led by Waters, who exploded for 28 points. Jones added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Julius Thomas also posted 11 points.
The Vikings lost to the Bengals earlier this season, but look for them to grab some revenge this evening against Idaho State, and secure a spot in the conference tournament.
