GAME NOTES: Two teams competing for the second seed in the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament come together tonight, as the Iona Gaels meet the Fairfield Stags in Bridgeport.
With just two games left in the regular season, Iona and Fairfield are tied for second place at 11-15, with Saint Peter's lurking just one game behind them both. So there is obviously a lot on the line tonight.
Iona enters the night riding a small two-game win streak and that includes a 69-53 besting of William & Mary in a non-league bout a week ago. The victory was the 20th of the campaign for the Gaels, who will wrap things up against Saint Peter's on Sunday.
On the flip side, the Stags were handed a 77-67 setback to Vermont in their most recent contest on Saturday. The defeat ended a small two-game win streak and dropped the team to 18-9 overall. Fairfield will conclude its regular- season against Niagara on Sunday.
As for the all-time series, Iona holds a 54-38 lead over Fairfield and that includes a 68-58 victory in the first meeting of the season.
In their most recent game, the Gaels shot 48.8 percent from the floor and held W&M to just a 36.2 percent effort in a 69-53 triumph. Iona also went a successful 9-of-21 from downtown in the win. Scott Machado led the charge with a 17-point performance, while Alejo Rodriguez and Jonathan Huffman tacked on 12 points apiece. For the season, Machado has done most of the damage for Iona, as he paces the squad with 12.6 ppg, 3.9 apg and 45 steals. He is the lone player averaging in double figures for an Iona club that has thrived on defense, forcing 16.5 turnovers per game.
The Stags couldn't find their stroke last game, as they hit just 37.3 percent of their field goals in a 77-67 loss to Vermont. Fairfield didn't have much luck from beyond the arc either, making only 6-of-22 attempts. Colin Nickerson came off the bench and turned in 20 points to lead the team in defeat, while Derek Needham posted 15 points and six assists. Needham currently leads the Stags in scoring at 16.0 ppg and he is also in charge of running the show, distributing a team-high 5.5 apg. Anthony Johnson meanwhile, is the muscle in the paint, as he nearly averages a double-double with 14.8 ppg and a team-high 9.4 rpg.
This is a huge game for both teams, as the winner has the inside track to the second seed in the league tourney. Go with the Stags, who have the better scoring options and the luxury of hosting the game.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
