GAME NOTES: The Saint Peter's Peacocks, still jockeying for position in upcoming league tourney, take on the Marist Red Foxes tonight in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the McCann Center.
The Peacocks currently sit in fourth place in the MAAC standings at 10-6, but they trail Iona and Fairfield by just one game for second place. With two games remaining in the regular season, including Iona on Sunday, SPC has a legitimate shot to grab the second seed in the upcoming conference tourney. Most recently, the Peacocks stepped out of conference play, only to suffer a heart-breaking, 77-75, overtime loss to Buffalo on Saturday.
Marist meanwhile, has already locked up the worst record in the MAAC with just a 1-15 ledger. As a matter of fact, the Red Foxes have only one win in 27 games overall, making them a candidate for the worst team in the nation. Since defeating Manhattan back on January 2nd, Marist has dropped 15 games in a row, including a narrow 66-65 setback at UC Irvine on Saturday.
The Red Foxes lead the head-to-head series with the Peacocks, 15-10, but SPC took the first meeting, 61-49, last month.
Buffalo's Sean Smiley drained a 17-footer as time expired in overtime, sending SPC to a tough 77-75 loss on Saturday. The Peacocks, who sent the game into overtime on a last-second trey by Nick Leon, set themselves back with 23 turnovers for the game. Leon finished with 25 points for SPC, but he also accounted for a team-high seven turnovers. Wesley Jenkins tallied 21 points and six boards, while Ryan Bacon posted 14 points and eight rebounds. On the season, Jenkins leads the club in scoring at 14.3 ppg and he also has a team- high 36 steals to his name. Leon is next in order with 13.4 ppg, while Bacon adds 10.2 ppg and a team-best 9.0 rpg to the mix.
Marist drained 13-of-24 shots from beyond the arc, but it still came up short in a 66-65 decision at UC Irvine on Saturday. The Red Foxes shot only 39.6 percent from the floor and were outscored at the foul line, 19-10, and dominated on the boards, 51-27, in the setback. Devin Price made 4-of-8 long- range buckets for 18 points in the loss, while Daye Kaba posted 13 points and eight boards. Candon Rusin chipped in with 10 points and he remains the team's leading scorer on the campaign at 9.9 ppg. Kaba is a close second at 9.0 ppg and he also brings in 5.2 rpg.
SPC is clearly the better team here and should have no trouble keeping its hopes of a second place finish alive with a victory over the dismal Red Foxes tonight.
