GAME NOTES: The Charlotte 49ers go for the season sweep of the George Washington Colonials this evening, as the Atlantic 10 foes square off at the Smith Center.
The 49ers edged the Colonials, 72-68, earlier this month and that victory knotted the all-time series at 10-10 between the schools. Charlotte has now won three of the past four encounters after GW won the prior five meetings in the rivalry.
To the present, Charlotte was able to end its slump on Wednesday, when it trounced Saint Joseph's 95-58. The win stopped a season-long three-game slide and pushed the 49ers to 19-8 overall and 9-4 within the conference.
On the opposite side, GW is also coming off a victory on Wednesday, scoring an 81-72 result against La Salle. It marked the third win in the last four tries for the Colonials, who are now 15-11 overall and 5-8 in the A-10.
The 49ers turned in their best offensive performance of the campaign on Wednesday, as they shot an efficient 56.9 percent from the floor in a 95-58 rout of Saint Joseph's. Charlotte also did a terrific job from beyond the arc, where it went 12-of-24. Ian Andersen made 5-of-8 long-range buckets for a team-high 19 points, while Shamari Spears had 17 points and six rebounds. Spears currently leads the 49ers in scoring at 16.5 ppg and he is also pulling down 6.2 rpg. Derrio Green adds 13.7 ppg and he is one of the top defenders on the team, recording 42 steals.
The Colonials hit on 45.2 percent of their field goals and prevented any comeback attempt with a 21-of-30 effort at the foul line in an 81-72 win over La Salle on Wednesday. Lasan Kromah led the charge with 22 points and six boards, while Dwayne Smith turned in 21 points and eight rebounds. Damian Hollis got involved with 14 points and five rebounds and he continues to pace GW in scoring (13.7 ppg) as well as rebounding (4.9 rpg) for the season. Kromah is next in order at 12.3 ppg and he is a 37.8 percent three-point shooter.
Charlotte is coming off a much-needed win and it should be able to continue its momentum with a road victory this evening.
