GAME NOTES: The Elon Phoenix will conclude the regular season by hosting the Davidson Wildcats in a Southern Conference game this evening.
Davidson was a 60-56 homecourt winner over UNC Greensboro on Wednesday. The win lifted the Wildcats over the .500 mark at 15-14 overall and 10-7 in the SoCon's South Division. They will be seeded third out of the division for the conference tournament, regardless of this evening's result. Davidson is 4-6 in true road games this season.
Elon was a 98-88 loser at Georgia Southern on Thursday. The Phoenix have lost their last two and four of their last six. Elon now stands at 8-21 overall and 5-12 in the North Division, good for a three-way tie for fourth place. The Phoenix will be seeded somewhere between third and sixth out of the division depending on the results of other games. They are just 4-6 at home.
This is the only regular-season meeting between these two teams. Davidson beat the Phoenix twice last season and leads the all-time series 32-10. The Wildcats have won the last 14 games in the series.
J.P. Kuhlman scored 14 points to lead Davidson to the win on Wednesday. Jake Cohen added 13 points off the bench, while Will Archambault tallied 11 points to go with seven rebounds. Davidson was 11-of-23 from three-point range. Cohen leads the team in scoring at 13.1 ppg, shooting 46.6 percent from the floor, but just 30.0 percent from outside the arc, Kuhlman is next on the scoring list at 12.3 ppg. He's shooting 41.7 percent from long range. Archambault is also in double figures at 11.1 ppg. Steve Rossiter leads the Wildcats in rebounding at 6.1 boards per contest, while Brendan McKillop is fifth in the conference at 4.1 apg. He has an impressive assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.8- to-1. Davidson is shooting 43.0 percent from the floor and 68.1 percent from the foul line. The Wildcats are scoring 70.5 ppg, while giving up 68.5 defensively.
Devan Carter's 17 points paced Elon in the loss at Georgia Southern on Thursday. Adam Constantine added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Josh Bonney finished with 15 points, while T.J. Douglas and Chris Long posted 13 and 11 points, respectively. Elon built a 43-32 halftime lead but couldn't hold it, despite shooting 13-of-25 from three-point range. Drew Spradlin leads the Phoenix in scoring at 12.9 ppg. He's hitting just 39.6 percent from the floor, but a respectable 35.7 percent from long range. Constantine is averaging 12.0 ppg and is second in the conference in rebounding at 8.2 rpg. Chris Long is sixth in the conference at 3.9 apg. Elon is shooting 41.3 percent from the floor, but is at just 31.4 percent from long range, and a mediocre 64.9 percent from the foul line. The Phoenix are scoring 66.3 ppg and giving up 72.7 ppg at the other end of the floor.
It's been more than nine years since Elon has beaten Davidson and the Wildcats will extend their winning streak this evening.
