Delaware (7-22) at Towson (8-20)

GAME NOTES: A couple of teams that have had very little to cheer about this year are preparing to close out the 2009-10 regular season, as the Towson Tigers tangle with the Delaware Blue Hens in a Colonial Athletic Association showdown this afternoon at the Towson Center.

Delaware is all alone in last place in the CAA standings with a mere three wins in 17 opportunities and has a total of only seven victories on the season to date. The Blue Hens played their final home game on Wednesday night and nearly pulled off an upset before suffering the 61-59 loss to George Mason. The squad finished its home slate with a record of 5-10, but overall has won only twice since the second day of January.

As for the Tigers, a team that picked up a 71-68 win against Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center earlier in the season, they have a total of only eight wins this season themselves. Towson actually snapped a two-game slide three nights ago by upsetting William & Mary on the road in an 83-77 final.

In terms of the all-time series between these schools, the Hens own a 36-26 advantage even after losing the first meeting of the season in the middle of January.

Delaware led by as many as seven points in the first half on Wednesday night against George Mason, but the Hens scored barely half as many points after the break and ended up with yet another disappointing outcome. Jawan Carter again found himself leading in the scoring column with 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, while Edwin Santiago and Alphonso Dawson chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Carter, one of the leading scorers in the conference at 18.3 ppg, is shooting just 38.7 percent from the floor, but has somewhat made up for his inaccuracy with a total of 72 three-point baskets and 159-of-197 at the charity stripe. The only player to have started all 29 games, Carter has made more than three times as many shots at the free-throw line as all but one of his teammates has even attempted this season.

Troy Franklin led four starters in double figures as he tallied 27 points, hitting all 10 of his free-throw attempts and 7-of-10 from the floor, in the victory over William & Mary at Kaplan Arena. Not only did he pace his team in scoring, Franklin also accounted for half the group's 14 assists as well. Robert Nwankwo registered a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, adding four blocked shots, while Josh Thornton and RaShawn Polk 14 and 12 points, respectively. Nwankwo is a force in the paint for the Tigers this season, even if the team has not been that successful, with 10.1 ppg, 9.2 rpg and a total of 76 blocked shots, one of the highest totals in the CAA. Thornton and Calvin Lee are both putting up 10.8 ppg, but still the Tigers are being outscored by more than eight points per outing right now.

As long as Carter is able to find a rhythm behind the three-point line he and the Blue Hens should have a fighting chance in this meeting.
