GAME NOTES: The Saint Louis Billikens will try to get back on the winning track when they host the Duquesne Dukes in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup tonight at Chaifetz Arena.
Saint Louis had its six-game win streak snapped in a 73-71 loss to Xavier on Wednesday. There is a three-way tie for first place in the A-10 standings with three games to play, and Saint Louis is tied with Charlotte at 9-4, two games back of the leaders. The Billikens are 14-2 at home, and they'll stay in St. Louis to face 20th-ranked Temple on Wednesday, before closing out the regular season at Dayton next weekend.
After starting just 1-8 on the road this season, Duquesne has managed to win its last two road games to restore some confidence. The Dukes have won their last three games overall, the most recent of which was a 73-71 victory over Dayton on Sunday. Following tonight's tilt, they'll play at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, then wrap up their schedule at home against Fordham on Friday night.
Saint Louis won the first meeting this season, 77-75 in a double overtime thriller in Pittsburgh on January 13th. The Dukes lead the all-time series, 6-4.
Damian Saunders put the Dukes on his back against Dayton last Sunday, as he scored 16 of his team-high 20 points in the second half. None of those points were bigger than an aggressive layup that put Duquesne on top for good with 25 seconds remaining. Thanks to Saunders, the Dukes overcame a brutal shooting day in which they went just 2-of-18 (.111) from beyond the arc. The Dukes can also thank their defensive focus, as they forced 21 turnovers for the game. Eric Evans added 14 points in the victory, and Bill Clark chipped in with 12 off the bench. Saunders averages a double-double, as he is putting up 15.0 points and 11.6 rebounds per outing. Clark is next in line with 13.9 ppg and 6.0 rpg, while Melquan Bolding (11.7), B.J. Monteiro (10.9) and Evans (10.1) are all averaging double figures.
Saint Louis is led by sophomore guard Kwamain Mitchell, who has started all 26 games and is tallying 16.0 ppg. Down low, the Billikens boast a solid forward tandem in Cody Ellis (12.2 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and Willie Reed (12.0 ppg, 8.4 rpg). When Reed gets the ball deep on the block, it is usually bad news for opponents, as he is shooting 56.2 percent from the floor. The Billikens are a pesky defensive squad, having held opponents to 39.3 percent shooting and 59.6 ppg. The defense clamped down as Saint Louis nearly rallied all the way back from a 13-point deficit in the final seven minutes against Xavier earlier this week. Mitchell scored 21 in the loss, while Ellis added 19 and Reed piled up 18 points and 13 rebounds. Saint Louis knocked down 10-of-25 three-pointers and committed only six turnovers for the game, but Xavier held a key 42-28 rebounding advantage.
The Billikens know they are a longshot to win the A-10 regular-season title, but as long as they are not mathematically eliminated, you can expect them to pull out all the stops.
