GAME NOTES: The Florida Gators have quietly put together a strong season, and they will attempt to add another victory to their record today when they visit the Georgia Bulldogs in SEC action.
Florida has won its last three games to move to 20-8 overall and 9-4 in conference. On Tuesday, the Gators earned their 13th home win with a 75-62 decision over Tennessee.
Georgia seemed to have a victory over nationally-ranked Vanderbilt wrapped up on Thursday, but the Bulldogs collapsed in the final minute of regulation and eventually dropped a 96-94 decision in overtime. The loss was the second in the last three games for the inconsistent 'Dawgs, who are now 12-14 overall and a poor 4-9 in SEC action. They are 11-3 at home this season, far better than their 0-10 mark in true road games.
Florida beat Georgia in an 87-71 final last month, and the Gators own a 103-95 series advantage.
As the regular season winds down, Florida has five double-digit scorers in the fold. Kenny Boynton leads the way with 13.5 ppg, while Erving Walker adds 13.2 ppg. Walker has also handed out 142 assists to go along with 41 steals, but both he and Boynton are shooting less than 37 percent from the field. Alex Tyus, who has made good on 51.1 percent of his field goal attempts, provides 12.3 ppg and 7.0 rpg, while Chandler Parsons pitches in with 11.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg. Vernon Macklin nets 10.4 ppg for the Gators, who are posting 71.9 ppg while allowing 64.2 ppg. Parsons and Walker both scored 19 points against Tennessee earlier this week, and Macklin finished with 13 points and 10 boards. The Gators connected on 50.9 percent of their field goal attempts and held the Vols to 39.7 percent shooting.
Trey Thompkins isn't often mentioned among the top performers in the SEC, but the Georgia forward is scoring 17.8 ppg on 50.1 percent shooting from the floor while also ripping down 8.1 rpg. Travis Leslie provides 14.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg, and Ricky McPhee contributes 10.2 ppg. The Bulldogs are scoring 68.9 ppg while allowing 69.3 ppg to opponents. Leslie posted 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in the heart-breaking loss to Vanderbilt, and Thompkins tallied 21 points. Dustin Ware had 16 points and eight assists with no turnovers for Georgia, which suffered a 35-18 deficit in points from the foul line. The Bulldogs led by six points with under a minute to play and couldn't seal the deal.
Despite the fact that they are playing on the road against an improving group of 'Dawgs, expect the Gators to get the job done today. Balanced scoring will again be the key to success for Florida.
