Fresno State (14-15) at San Jose State (13-14)

GAME NOTES: The San Jose State Spartans play their third straight home game tonight as they host the Fresno State Bulldogs in a Western Athletic Conference showdown.

SJSU, which hits the road for the final two regular-season games next week, is coming off an 83-79 setback to Nevada two nights ago. The loss was the second straight and the sixth in seven tries for a Spartans group that is now just 5-8 in conference after such a promising start.

As for the Bulldogs, a team that is a mere 3-9 in true road games, they managed to snap a three-game slide on Tuesday night with their 79-68 victory versus Cal State Bakersfield. This meeting is scheduled to be the first for the Bulldogs against a conference foe since suffering a 74-70 loss to Nevada on the road on February 17th.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, FSU is ahead by a 77-72 count with its in-state and conference rival, winning the first meeting of the season last month by a score of 80-70 at home at the Save Mart Center.

Defense played a crucial part for the Bulldogs in their win over Bakersfield earlier in the week. The visitors were limited to just 36.9 percent from the floor and forced Bakersfield into 16 turnovers. Greg Smith and Mike Ladd both tallied 17 points for Fresno State, while Paul George accounted for 16 points, seven assists and six boards in the triumph as well. George, who only recently came back from an injury, leads the program in scoring and rebounding with his 17.5 ppg and 7.2 rpg and is also second on the team in assists with 79 assists. Sylvester Seay, who was held in check in the last game, accounts for 14.9 ppg and 6.0 rpg, but his 28.8 percent shooting behind the three-point line takes away from his aggressive play in the paint.

Adrian Oliver scored a game-high 35 points, shooting 13-of-22 from the floor on Thursday night, but even that sort of effort was not enough to keep the Spartans out of the loss column. The only other player to score in double figures was Mac Peterson with his 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting behind the three-point line for the home team. One of the top scorers in the entire nation with his 23.3 ppg, Oliver has scored at least 30 points seven times this season and is now shooting 42 percent behind the three-point line. More than just a shooter however, Oliver has also cleared closed to five and a half rebounds per contest and has handed out 74 assists with his second on the team. Chris Oakes tries to lend a hand in the paint with his 8.9 rpg and is also second on the unit with 11.0 ppg.

Obviously Oliver is a player that has rarely seen a shot that he hasn't like and chances are if the Bulldogs can stop him, they can stop the Spartans.
