GAME NOTES: The red-hot Hofstra Pride entertain the George State Panthers today in a Colonial Athletic Association bout at the Mack Sports Complex.
The Pride could be the most dangerous team heading into the upcoming CAA Tournament, as it has won five straight and eight of its past nine outings. The most recent of the team's victories came on Tuesday, a 73-62 besting of then league-leading Northeastern. The win improved Hofstra to 9-8 within the conference, locking the team into the seventh seed for the conference tourney.
GSU meanwhile, is still jockeying for position, as the team is tied with two other squads for eighth place in the league standings at 5-12. The Panthers recently had a two-game win streak snapped with a 75-62 setback against Old Dominion on Tuesday. The team now must find a way to rebound on the road, where it has gone just 1-11 thus far.
This is just the seventh all-time meeting between Hofstra and GSU, with the Pride holding a 5-1 lead in the series.
The Panthers trailed by just one at the break, but shot a lackluster 37.9 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of what ended up being a 75-62 loss to ODU earlier in the week. GSU was outscored at the foul line 16-6, and its 14 turnovers resulted in 22 points for ODU. Joe Dukes paced the team in the loss with 22 points and four helpers, while Trey Hampton logged 17 points and seven boards. For the season, Dukes has nearly done it all for GSU, as he leads the team with 13.2 ppg, 3.8 apg and 52 steals. Trae Goldston, who was held scoreless last game, chips in with 10.4 ppg and he is a 39.2 percent three-point shooter.
Hofstra closed the game on a 12-1 run en route to a 73-62 victory at Northeastern on Tuesday. The Pride shot 49.1 percent from the floor and dropped in 7-of-17 buckets from beyond the arc as well. Charles Jenkins compensated for nine turnovers with an all-around performance of 20 points, eight boards and seven assists. One of the top players in the CAA, Jenkins has carried the Pride this season and he averages a healthy 20.1 ppg, to go with 3.8 apg and 53 steals. Chaz Williams isn't nearly the same kind of scoring threat at 9.8 ppg, but he complements Jenkins with 4.0 apg and 47 steals.
The Pride is sizzling at the moment and backed by another terrific performance from Jenkins, Hofstra should have no trouble defeating GSU today.
