GAME NOTES: The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks close out the 2009-10 regular season at the Eblen Center in Cookeville tonight, as the two meet in an Ohio Valley Conference tussle.
JSU enter tonight's meeting with a meager 11-17 overall record, which includes a 7-10 mark in OVC play. The Gamecocks have lost four straight and six of their last seven outings, with the club's most recent defeat coming in the form of a tough 59-55 final against Presbyterian last Saturday.
As for Tennessee Tech, things have not gone well for the club as of late. The Golden Eagles notched victories in four consecutive contests over the last week of January, but have since been mired in a tailspin that has seen losses in six of the last seven, including three straight. Tennessee Tech's most recent setback, an 81-68 final at Appalachian State last Saturday, dropped the Golden Eagles to 13-16 on the year.
Tennessee Tech owns a slim 9-8 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs.
Jacksonville State shot just 38.0 percent from the floor and hit a mere 2- of-12 from long range last Saturday against Presbyterian, but turnovers are what really did in the Gamecocks. The squad was guilty of 14 giveaways, seven in each half, to account for 15 points for the Blue Hose. Nick Murphy scored 17 points and collected nine rebounds to lead JSU in the losing effort, while Stephen Hall accounted for 12 points to go with seven boards. Jeremy Bynum got into the mix as well, chipping in 11 points. The Gamecocks will have to do without leading scorer Trenton Marshall once again, who had paced the club with a 17.7 ppg scoring average before being suspended for the remainder of the season. Murphy follows with his 14.3 ppg, and also comes up with a team- high 7.1 rpg, while Bynum checks in with 10.4 ppg.
The Golden Eagles shot a respectable 45.3 percent from the floor during last Saturday's loss at Appalachian State, but the squad also hit just 4-of-12 from long range and allowed the Mountaineers to shoot at a 54.2 percent clip. Kevin Murphy scored 25 points while collecting five rebounds and dishing out five assists to pace Tennessee Tech in the losing effort, while Alfred Jones chipped in with 12 points. The Golden Eagles average a solid 75.4 ppg this year, but have allowed the opposition to put up 78.3 ppg. Murphy leads the squad at the offensive end with his 15.4 ppg, while Davis has also been a valuable resource with his 14.2 ppg. Elijah Muhammad rounds out a trio of double-digit scorers with 12.2 ppg, and he has also set up his teammates with a team-high 131 assists.
Tennessee Tech would love to end the regular season on a high note, especially given its current woes. We'll go ahead and give the Golden Eagles the nod.
