GAME NOTES: Fresh off their first SEC victory of the season, the LSU Tigers invade Auburn this evening for a clash with another group of Tigers.
LSU carried a 12-game losing streak into Wednesday's home game against Arkansas, a talented team that has played fairly well in recent weeks. With those factors in mind, the fact that the Tigers were able to beat the Razorbacks by a 65-54 final was surprising. Unfortunately, they carry an 0-7 record in true road games into tonight's affair.
As for Auburn, it has lost three of its last four games to fall to 13-15 overall and 4-9 in SEC action. The Tigers were defeated on the road by Ole Miss on Wednesday, as that game ended in an 85-75 final. They now return home, however, where 10 of their 13 victories this season have been earned.
Auburn beat LSU by an 84-80 final last month, but the latter owns an 80-60 lead in the all-time series.
Tasmin Mitchell has been the leading scorer for LSU in four consecutive outings, and he is netting 17.6 ppg to go along with 9.6 rpg. Bo Spencer checks in with 14.5 ppg, but his 33.2 percent shooting from the floor is downright horrendous. Rounding out a productive trio is Storm Warren with 11.9 ppg and 7.3 rpg, but the Tigers don't have another player on the roster averaging more than 4.5 ppg. They are posting 62.5 ppg this season while allowing 66.9 ppg to opponents, and the differential is extremely lopsided in league play. Sure, there are plenty of negatives to dwell on, but Wednesday's performance was certainly positive. Mitchell scored 16 points against Arkansas, and Spencer added 10 points. LSU played tremendous team defense, forcing 21 turnovers while holding the Razorbacks to 34 percent shooting.
DeWayne Reed leads four double-digit scorers for Auburn this season, as he is netting 16.1 ppg despite his 39.1 percent shooting from the floor. Reed has handed out 122 assists, proof of his play-making ability. Tay Waller adds 14.9 ppg, and he is shooting 40.8 percent from three-point range. Lucas Hargrove checks in with 13.3 ppg and 7.2 rpg, while Frankie Sullivan adds 12.8 ppg. Auburn is generating 76.0 ppg while holding opponents to 74.4 ppg. Waller poured in 29 points on the strength of 8-of-11 shooting from three-point range against Ole Miss last time out, and Reed added 21 points. Auburn connected on just 36.1 percent of its field goal attempts, however, and a 50-29 rebounding deficit proved to be crippling.
A second straight victory for LSU seems unlikely, as the team hasn't proven capable of winning on the road. Auburn will complete the season sweep.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
