GAME NOTES: The 49ers of Long Beach State try yet again to put together their first three-game win streak of 2009-10, as they challenge the Pacific Tigers in a Big West Conference battle tonight at the Spanos Center in Stockton.
Six times this season LBSU has won back-to-back outings, but has been unable to string together a trio of wins. On Thursday night, the squad took care of UC Davis on the road in a 68-65 final, moving them to 7-7 in conference with only UC Riverside left on the schedule for next week.
As for the Tigers, still second in the Big West standings behind UC Santa Barbara with their 9-4 mark, they were tripped up by UC Riverside two nights ago in a 62-53 final at home. Pacific, which defeated the Highlanders in their first meeting of the season by 15 points late last month, is now 10-4 at the Spanos Center in 2009-10.
Pacific won the first meeting of the season against The Beach just 10 days ago with a 74-52 victory, which means the 49ers now lead the all-time series by a count of 50-35.
T.J. Robinson posted another double-double as he tallied 25 points and cleared a game-high 12 rebounds in the win over UC Davis two nights ago. Also scoring in double figures for the visitors were Casper Ware with 14 points, even though he shot just 2-of-7 from the floor, and Larry Anderson and Greg Plater with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Stunningly, LBSU picked up the win despite shooting a woeful 32.7 percent form the field and 4-of-21 behind the three-point line. Robinson, who is shooting almost as well from the field (.521) as he is the free-throw line (.572) this season, leads the program in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 15.6 points and 10.4 boards per contest, although both of those numbers decrease slightly when it comes to league opponents. The fact is, the team as a whole finds itself shooting just 63.5 percent at the charity stripe in conference and is down to 68.0 ppg in those meetings.
Pacific appeared to be off and running with a 4-0 lead three minutes into the game against UCR, but then the offense for the Tigers fell apart and the group managed a total of just seven field goals in the frame and 18 in 40 minutes. Sam Willard came up with 15 points and 11 rebounds, both of which led Pacific, yet no one else on the team could come up with more than eight points as they shot a collective 33.3 percent from the field and 6-of-24 beyond the arc. Rarely this season has the same player led this team in scoring in back-to- back games, in fact, it has happened only twice. Because of that lack of consistency, it should come as little surprise that Willard stands as the only double-digit scorer for the program with his mere 10.6 ppg through 27 starts. It figures that Willard would be the one in the top position given that he plays close enough to the rim to collect a team-best 7.9 rpg. Even though Pacific is scoring just 65.2 ppg, at least the squad can be pleased with the fact that they are allowing a mere 60.5 ppg at the moment too.
The motivation for LBSU in this meeting is revenge and the thought is certainly fresh in the minds of the 49ers, and seeing as how Pacific fumbled away a chance for another victory just two nights ago, it could certainly happen again.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
