GAME NOTES: The Saint Mary's Gaels and Loyola Marymount Lions go head-to-head tonight in a West Coast Conference showdown at McKeon Pavilion.
The Lions continue to play well with the conference tourney on tap next, as they have won three straight and five of their past six decisions. Included in the team's run was an upset of Gonzaga and most recently a 72-69 nipping of San Diego on Thursday. LMU is now 7-6 within the conference and tied with San Francisco for fourth place.
As for SMC, it took care of Pepperdine, 76-49, on Thursday to wrap up the second-seed in the upcoming league tourney at 10-3. It marked the second straight win for the Gaels, who are now a healthy 23-5 overall and 13-2 at home.
The Gaels lead the all-time series with the Lions, 75-53, and they have won the last seven meetings, including an 85-67 victory just last month.
The Lions shot 44.4 percent from the floor and went 7-of-16 from downtown, as they held off San Diego for a 72-69 win on Thursday. Drew Viney poured in a career-high 35 points and ripped down eight caroms to lead the charge, while Kevin Young logged 13 points and seven rebounds. On the season, Viney leads LMU in both scoring (17.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg) and he is a 42.4 percent three-point shooter. Vernon Teel is another player that can do it all and he checks in with 14.7 ppg, 5.5 rpg and a team-high 5.9 apg. Jarred DuBois tacks on 12.4 ppg, while Young and Larry Davis chip in with 11.0 and 10.3 ppg, respectively.
The Gaels made 46.3 percent of their field goals and held Pepperdine to a dismal 34.5 percent effort, as they coasted to a 76-49 victory on Thursday. Omar Samhan led the charge with a double-double of 20 points and 10 boards, while Matthew Dellavedova posted 17 points and four assists. It marked the 18th double-double of the campaign for Samhan, who is averaging one on the season with a healthy 21.1 ppg and 11.2 rpg. Mickey McConnell adds 13.2 ppg and a team-best 5.2 apg to the mix, while Dellavedova produces 12.3 ppg and 4.6 apg. Both players are also deadly from long range, with McConnell shooting at a 50.9 percent clip and Dellavedova at a 41.4 percent rate.
LMU is playing with a lot of confidence right now, but the Gaels are still the better team and should end up on top behind Samhan and company tonight.
