Maryland (20-7) at Virginia Tech (21-6)

GAME NOTES: The surging Maryland Terrapins carry a four-game win streak into Blacksburg for this afternoon's ACC clash with the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Maryland is playing with a wealth of confidence right now, and the most recent win for the team came on Wednesday in an 88-79 final over Clemson. The Terps are now 20-7 overall, including 10-3 in league play, and they are still alive in the race for the ACC crown. It will be important for coach Gary Williams to keep his Maryland squad focused on Virginia Tech and not on the key matchup with Duke scheduled for Wednesday.

Speaking of the Hokies, they have won all 14 of their home games this season, an obvious reason for confidence today. The last two outings have taken place on the road, however, and both have ended in double-digit defeats. Wednesday's 80-60 setback to Boston College was particularly disappointing, as the Eagles aren't one of the better teams in the ACC. Still, VaTech is 21-6 overall, including 8-5 in conference.

Maryland owns a commanding 28-6 series advantage over Virginia Tech, which includes an 83-73 victory over the Hokies last season.

Greivis Vasquez is the leading scorer for Maryland with 18.7 ppg, and he has handed out 174 assists while providing tremendous leadership. While there are a number of outstanding performers in the ACC, Vasquez deserves strong consideration for conference player of the year honors. He gets some help from Landon Milbourne, who checks in with 13.1 ppg. Eric Hayes (10.9 ppg) and Sean Mosley (10.6 ppg) add balance to the lineup for the Terps, who are generating 79.1 ppg while holding opponents to 66.0 ppg on 37.6 percent shooting. Against Clemson, Mosley paced a balanced attack with 20 points, while Jordan Williams added 18 points. Vasquez and Hayes both scored 15 points, and Vasquez handed out a stellar total of 13 assists. Maryland finished with a 16-8 edge in points from the foul line, and the club had 20 assists against 10 turnovers.

While Maryland has a true star in the backcourt, Virginia Tech can make the same claim with Malcolm Delaney. The standout is scoring 20.2 ppg to go along with 107 assists, and his output would be even better if not for 38.6 percent shooting from the floor. Dorenzo Hudson brings 14.0 ppg to the floor for the Hokies, who are getting 11.3 ppg and 6.9 rpg from Jeff Allen. VaTech is a tremendous defensive team that is holding opponents to 62.9 ppg on 39.3 percent shooting. Offensively, the club posts 71.5 ppg. In the ugly loss to Boston College, however, the Hokies shot 31.1 percent from the floor and allowed the Eagles to hit 50.9 percent of their attempts. a 49-28 rebounding disadvantage was crippling, and Tech was simply outplayed in every aspect of the game.

Virginia Tech is unbeaten at home for a reason and will fight off Vasquez and company today. Expect this game to be decided in the final minute.
