North Carolina (14-14) at Wake Forest (18-7)

GAME NOTES: A dreadful regular season continues for the North Carolina Tar Heels this afternoon as they pay a visit to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in ACC action.

Sure, the Tar Heels lost most key contributors from last season's national title squad, but it is still hard to believe that the program is 3-10 versus ACC competition just one year later. The Tar Heels have lost their last three games and seven of the last eight to fall to 14-14 overall, and they are a woeful 1-7 in true road affairs. On Wednesday, Florida State came to Chapel Hill and marched out with a 77-67 win.

The Demon Deacons are desperate for a victory as well, as they have lost their last two games to fall to 18-7 overall and 8-5 in league play. They have been idle since last weekend when they dropped a 68-54 decision to an NC State team that has been regarded as inferior. The hope today for Wake fans is that the team can improve an already impressive 12-1 home record.

Wake Forest beat North Carolina in an 82-69 final on January 20th, but the Tar Heels still own a 151-65 series advantage over the Demon Deacons.

Will Graves scored 21 points on the strength of five three-pointers for North Carolina on Wednesday, and John Henson added 12 points. Unfortunately, the Tar Heels were outshot and outrebounded by Florida State in the setback. They trailed the Seminoles by 15 points at intermission and simply weren't able to recover. Deon Thompson continues to lead UNC in scoring with 14.1 ppg this season, but he is the only active double-digit scorer on the roster. The club clearly misses Ed Davis (13.4 ppg, 9.6 rpg), a standout center who will likely miss the remainder of the season with a broken wrist. UNC is generating 76.9 ppg this season while allowing 72.9 ppg to opponents on 41.9 percent shooting from the field.

While UNC has only one double-digit scorer in the fold, Wake Forest boasts a trio that is led by Al-Farouq Aminu and his 16.8 ppg. More than just a scorer, Aminu is ripping down 11.0 rpg to go along with 40 blocks and 38 steals. Ishmael Smith, who leads the Demon Deacons with 44 steals, checks in with 13.2 ppg and 154 assists. C.J. Harris rounds out the trio with 10.2 ppg despite his 39.9 percent shooting from the floor. Wake Forest is scoring 74.8 ppg this season while allowing 68.4 ppg to opponents. In the ugly loss to NC State, Aminu had 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Smith and L.D. Williams both scored 12 points. Unfortunately for the Deacs, they shot a paltry 34.8 percent from the floor, and missed all 12 of their three-point tries. They also finished with only six assists and 23 turnovers.

Wake Forest can't afford to lose this game, and UNC may not be good enough to win it. That's good news for fans of the Demon Deacons.
