Northeastern (18-11) at George Mason (17-12)

GAME NOTES: Needing some help to capture the Colonial Athletic Association title, the Northeastern Huskies make the trip to Fairfax, Virginia today to battle the George Mason Patriots in the regular-season finale.

Northeastern, which started off 2009-10 with just two wins in a nine outings, has bounced back in a big way and now trails only Old Dominion in the CAA standings. The Huskies, who are 13-4 in conference, suffered their second straight loss and the third in the last four games on Tuesday night when they bowed to Hofstra at home, 73-62.

The Huskies now need to win today and have ODU fall to Virginia Commonwealth in order to capture the league title.

As for the Patriots, who are third in the conference at 12-5, they snapped a three-game slide on Wednesday night with a narrow 61-59 comeback win against Delaware on the road.

George Mason was crushed in the first meeting of the season between these teams at Matthews Arena in Boston on January 7th, absorbing the 71-46 setback, yet the Patriots still cling to an 8-7 edge in the all-time series nonetheless.

The Huskies trailed by just two points late in the second half, but then the offense went cold and the team bowed to Hofstra on Senior Night in Boston. Nkem Ojougboh paced four players in double figures with his 15 points and seven rebounds, followed by Matt Janning with 12 points, but he shot just 3- of-13 from the floor and missed all five of his three-pointers in his final home game. Chaisson Allen came off the bench to chip in 11 points and Manny Adako 10. Even though he had a rough time shooting the ball, Janning is still the leading scorer for the program with his 15.0 ppg, while Chaisson generates 14.3 ppg after having improved his perimeter aim and converting 43.5 percent behind the three-point line. The Huskies had struggled on offense this season with just 65.4 ppg, but holding opponents to just 60.6 ppg has certainly given Northeastern the advantage.

Considering the Patriots were matched up against Delaware three nights ago, even if it was on the road, George Mason should have had an easier time against a one-dimensional opponent. Andre Cornelius accounted for a team-best 16 points, hitting 4-of-7 behind the three-point line, while Cam Long came up a rebound shy of a double-double with his 14 points and four assists. Sherrod Wright chipped in off the bench with 10 points and five boards. Long, the only player to have started all 29 games for the Patriots this season, leads the program in both scoring and assists with 12.7 ppg, and 96 dishes, respectively. However, Long could stand some improved accuracy from the floor where he is shooting only 39 percent this season. As a team, George Mason is shooting only 64.4 percent at the free-throw line and that has held it to just 66.9 ppg.

Northeastern has too much on the line not to work extra hard to earn the victory today and cross its fingers that VCU will do it a favor against ODU as well.
