GAME NOTES: The Northern Colorado Bears have made the trek to the Golden State for tonight's Big Sky Conference clash with the Sacramento State Hornets.
The Bears enter this contest with a 23-6 overall record, and they are riding a modest three-game win streak. They most recently claimed an 88-67 victory over Johnson & Wales on Tuesday night, and pushed their league mark to 11-4 with a 64-61 decision over Portland State last Saturday. A win tonight would give UNC the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big Sky Tournament, as well as tie the 1988-89 team for the best record in school history.
As for Sacramento State, it suffered a loss for the tenth time in its last 12 games on Friday night in a 73-59 final against Northern Arizona. The Hornets fell to a meager 3-12 in conference thanks to that defeat, and saw their home record drop to 5-7 in the process.
Northern Colorado owns a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series between these two programs.
The Bears shot a respectable 45.8 percent in the recent win over Johnson & Wales, but more importantly buried 8-of-19 shots from beyond the arc while limiting the Wildcats to just 41.1 percent from the floor. The Bears also forced 13 turnovers, and dominated down low with a 46-22 in points in the paint. Will Figures posted a game-high 22 points to lead the way for UNC, while Connor Osborne finished with 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Figures paces a squad that averages a healthy 74.0 ppg with his 16.6 ppg scoring average, while Devon Beitzel follows with 14.3 ppg to go with a team- high 52 steals over the course of his 26 starts.
It was a miserable performance by the Hornets in the 14-point loss to NAU, as the they hit just 40.4 percent of their attempts from the floor. Sacramento State struggled from the foul line as well, converting 11-of-20, and was outrebounded by a 36-27 margin. Justin Eller scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the way for the Hornets in defeat, while Duro Bjegovic and Antonio Flaggs finished with 12 points apiece. The Hornets average just 64.4 ppg for the season, and they currently boast just a pair of double-digit scorers. Eller leads the squad at both ends of the court with his 10.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, while Sultan Toles-Bey checks in with 10.4 ppg in addition to a team-high 96 assists.
Give the Bears the nod in this one, as the Hornets have done little to inspire much confidence this season.
