Notre Dame (18-10) at (11) Georgetown (19-7)

GAME NOTES: The Notre Dame Fighting Irish seek their second straight big win, as they travel to Washington D.C. for this afternoon's Big East clash with the 11th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas.

The Irish are in need of some quality wins to give the selection committee something to think about. The team is 18-10 on the year, but a 7-8 conference mark is a major hindrance. The team took a step in the right direction this week with a 68-53 pasting of nationally-ranked Pittsburgh. The win halted a three-game losing streak and gives the team some slim hope of NCAA Tournament worthiness.

Georgetown's NCAA Tournament future is a certainty, as the team is 19-7 on the year and 9-6 in Big East play. The Hoyas, who had lost to both Syracuse and Rutgers coming into the week, got back on track with a 70-60 victory at Louisville.

This is the 26th all-time meeting in this series. The Hoyas hold a 14-11 series advantage and have won five of the last six matchups.

The Irish are chock-full of talent and can play with anyone in the conference. The real surprise this week was the way Notre Dame dismantled Pittsburgh, despite playing without All-American candidate Luke Harangody. The 6-8 senior has missed the last two games, but the team has found scoring options. Against the Panthers, Notre Dame was led by Tim Abromaitis' 17 points. Ben Hansbrough followed with 15 points, Tory Jackson added 14 and Tyrone Nash chipped in with 13. The Irish finished the game converting 50 percent from the floor, including an impressive 10-of-18 from behind the arc. Harangody is still the leader of this team, ranking second nationally in scoring at 24.1 ppg, while pulling down 10.0 rpg. Abromaitis is next in the scoring column at 17.3 ppg, followed by Hansbrough's 12.2 ppg. Jackson is one of the league's top point guards, netting 9.3 ppg and pacing the Big East with 5.7 apg.

Georgetown has relied heavily on the play of its starting five. Austin Freeman paces the Hoyas in scoring at 17.5 ppg and has upped that to 20.2 ppg against Big East foes. Greg Monroe is next in line and is one of the premier big men in the league, averaging 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Chris Wright (14.0 ppg), Jason Clark (10.4 ppg) and Julian Vaughn (8.2 ppg) round out the potent quintet. Freeman was outstanding in the road win at Louisville, hitting five three-pointers en route to a game-high 29 points. Monroe was his usual dominant self in the paint, recording a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds. The Hoyas shot .469 from the floor overall and converted half of their 16 three-point attempts. Trailing by six points at halftime, Georgetown erupted for 41 second half points for the win.

Harangody is listed as questionable, but even if he plays, he won't be at 100 percent. That could pose a problem against Georgetown's physical play.
