GAME NOTES: Southeastern Conference foes collide in Tuscaloosa this afternoon, as the Alabama Crimson Tide entertain the Ole Miss Rebels.
Ole Miss had lost three straight heading into Wednesday's meeting with Auburn, and the Rebels were able to treat the home crowd to a much-needed 85-75 victory. They are now an impressive 18-9 overall, but their 6-7 conference record needs to be improved.
As for Alabama, it has lost its last two games and six of its last seven to fall to 14-13 overall and 4-9 in conference. On Wednesday, the Crimson Tide dropped a 74-66 decision to Mississippi State on the road, but they now return home where they are 10-5 this season.
Ole Miss beat Alabama in a 74-67 final three weeks ago, but the Tide still own a 115-50 series advantage over the Rebels.
Murphy Holloway was tremendous for Ole Miss in the recent win over Auburn, as he ripped down 20 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Chris Warren tallied 26 points, and Terrico White posted 21 points and five assists. The Rebels played tremendous defense, as they held the Tigers to 36.1 percent shooting from the floor. Also, a 50-29 rebounding advantage was key to the victory. Through 27 games, Warren is scoring 16.7 ppg. White checks in with 14.7 ppg, and Eniel Polynice contributes 10.2 ppg in addition to his 114 assists. The Rebels are generating 79.1 ppg this season while allowing 70.3 ppg, but they are outscoring SEC foes by less than one point per game.
Alabama relies heavily on the talents of two players to carry the load at the offensive end of the court. Mikhail Torrance leads the squad with 15.3 ppg, and he has dished out 138 assists, more than double the total of any other player on the roster. JaMychal Green is averaging 14.8 ppg to go along with 7.2 rpg and 48 blocks. The Tide are generating 67.9 ppg while permitting 64.1 ppg to foes, but that positive scoring differential is not indicative of the team's play against SEC foes. Torrance scored 23 points for 'Bama in the loss to Mississippi State on Wednesday, and Green had 12 points in that affair. Unfortunately, the Tide had twice as many turnovers as assists and were outscored by five points at the foul line.
The Crimson Tide will avenge the earlier loss to Ole Miss by beating the Rebels in Tuscaloosa today. Torrance and Green will be the difference as usual, but they will also get help from Senario Hillman, who has played well lately.
