GAME NOTES: The USC Trojans wrap up their home campaign tonight, as they host the Oregon State Beavers in a Pac-10 affair at the Galen Center.
The Trojans have gone a respectable 11-4 at home this season, but are coming off a 55-44 loss to Oregon at the Galen Center on Thursday. It was the second loss in a row following a four-game win streak, USC now sits at 16-11 overall and 8-7 within the conference.
As for OSU, it has also fallen in two straight outings, including a 65-56 setback at UCLA on Thursday. It marked the sixth loss in eight Pac-10 road games for the Beavers, who are now just 6-9 in league play.
In terms of the all-time series, USC owns a 66-56 lead over OSU, but the Beavers captured a 51-45 victory in the first meeting of the season.
The Beavers shot a dismal 34.5 percent from the field, including a poor 3- of-20 performance from downtown, as they were defeated by UCLA on Thursday. Calvin Haynes scored 14 points to pace OSU in the loss, while Joe Burton notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. On the season, Haynes heads the club in the scoring department at 13.3 ppg and he also shoots 38.5 percent from three-point range. Seth Tarver chips in with 10.5 ppg and he is a terrific defender, racking up 64 steals on the campaign.
USC led 44-42 with just over six minutes to go, but was outscored 12-0 down the stretch of a 54-44 loss to Oregon on Thursday. The Trojans shot a horrific 24.0 percent from the floor, including 0-of-13 from long distance, over the final 20 minutes, as they let a 32-23 halftime lead slip away. Marcus Johnson tallied 12 points in the setback for USC, while Alex Stepheson logged a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds. Dwight Lewis had just eight points on only 3-of-14 shooting from the floor, but he still remains the team's top scorer with 13.8 ppg for the season. Nikola Vucevic is next at 11.4 ppg and he also brings in a team-high 9.9 rpg.
Backed by the support of their home crowd and a better shooting night, expect the Trojans to prevail in this one.
