Penn (5-19) at Cornell (24-4)

GAME NOTES: The Cornell Big Red, the class of the Ivy League, host the Penn Quakers tonight.

It is hard to imagine the Quakers entering tonight's contest with much energy or enthusiasm, as the squad suffered a heart-breaking 56-55 loss to Columbia last night. The Lions hit a shot with 2.7 seconds remaining to claim that win, and the loss was the fourth in the last five games for Penn. The Quakers are 5-19 overall and 4-5 in the league.

Cornell fared much better than Penn last night, as the Big Red defeated Princeton by a 50-47 final to strengthen its hold on first place in the league standings. The club has won its last four games to move to 24-4 overall, including 10-1 in conference play, and 10 of the 11 home games to date have resulted in victory.

Penn recorded a shocking 79-64 victory over Cornell in the first meeting this season, and the Quakers own a 143-70 series lead over the Big Red.

Penn shot 52.4 percent from the floor in the first half against Columbia last night and led by three points at intermission. Unfortunately, the Quakers connected on only 40 percent of their field goal attempts over the final 20 minutes. They had more turnovers than assists in the tilt and were outscored by six points both in the paint and off turnovers. Dan Monckton posted 17 points for Penn, which got 16 points and five assists from Zack Rosen. Jack Eggleston pitched in 10 points for the Quakers, and he entered the game averaging 13.0 ppg. Rosen carried averages of 17.6 ppg and 4.4 apg into the clash with the Lions, and he is clearly one of the top performers in the Ivy League.

Ryan Wittman is considered by many to be the frontrunner for Ivy League Player of the Year honors, as the Cornell standout is netting 17.4 ppg on the strength of his 40.7 percent shooting from three-point range. Jeff Foote checks in with 12.6 ppg, 8.3 rpg and 54 blocks for the Big Red, who are getting 11.2 ppg from Louis Dale. Also, Dale has dished out 116 assists for Cornell, which is racking up 74.8 ppg while allowing 63.4 ppg to opponents. Against Princeton last night, Foote posted 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor. Wittman added 12 points, and the Big Red were able to overcome 34.2 percent shooting and a 31-25 rebounding disadvantage. They were fortunate to outscored the Tigers 22-7 from the foul line, the deciding factor in the contest.

Cornell is eager to avenge the earlier loss to Penn and will do so tonight in a blowout. Expect the Big Red to jump on top early and never look back.
