Pepperdine (7-22) at San Diego (9-20)

GAME NOTES: The Pepperdine Waves try once more to win their first true road game of the season tonight as they tangle with the San Diego Toreros in a West Coast Conference clash at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Pepperdine has won a couple of neutral-site outings in 2009-10, but the team has failed 11 times to defeat an opponent on their own floor. Since kicking off the WCC schedule with three straight wins over the likes of Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara and San Francisco in January, the Waves have crashed in 10 consecutive outings. On Thursday night, the team bowed to Saint Mary's-CA in Moraga by a final of 76-49.

The Toreros are the only team below Pepperdine in the WCC standings at the moment at 2-11. San Diego has fallen in six straight games and 11 of the last 12 overall after bowing to Loyola Marymount on Thursday night in a 72-69 final. Because the squad is at the bottom of the standings it is due to play in the first set of games in the upcoming WCC Tournament.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Pepperdine is ahead by a count of 53-33, but it was San Diego that logged a commanding 66-44 win in the first meeting of the season in Malibu last month.

Pepperdine never stood a chance against the Gaels a couple nights ago, scoring a mere 17 points in the first half before rolling over in the 27-point decision on the road. Mychel Thompson was the lone double-digit scorer for the Waves with his 11 points in 33 minutes, but he shot only 4-of-12 from the floor as the team connected on a mere 34.5 percent from the field and 2-of-15 behind the three-point line on the night. Thompson hasn't had much luck shooting from the field this season, converting at just a 36 percent clip, yet he is second on the team in scoring with his 12.0 ppg. Keion Bell is first on the list with 18.9 ppg, which means the pair is responsible for almost half of Pepperdine's 65.9 ppg this season.

The Toreros were tied with LMU at the break a couple night backs, but they then shot just 2-of-10 behind the three-point line and ended up with a total of 17 turnovers, making it that much more difficult to overtake the Lions. Chris Lewis converted all three of his three-point tries and was a perfect 4- of-4 from the floor overall as he finished with 13 points, followed by Patrick McCollum and Roberto Mafra with 12 points apiece, the latter logging six blocked shots as well. Brandon Johnson, generally the go-to guy on offense for the Toreros with his 12.9 ppg in league outings, was limited to only six points in the loss to LMU. When it comes to WCC matchups, San Diego has certainly seen better days because at the moment the group is scoring only 59.2 ppg while shooting just barely 40 percent from the floor. What's worse is that USD is allowing opponents to connect on 40.2 percent of their three-point tries.

Both of these programs have enjoyed better seasons, but for now they have to play with the hands they are dealt. Assuming Keion Bell is ready to show up and be a factor, expect Pepperdine to squeeze by in this meeting.
