Southern Miss (16-11) at Memphis (20-8)

GAME NOTES: The Memphis Tigers hope to make a late-season push at the Conference USA regular-season title, but in order to do so they'll have to knock off the Southern Miss Golden Eagles tonight at FedExForum.

Southern Miss fell to first-place UTEP on Wednesday, 59-56, becoming the Miners' 11th consecutive victim. The Golden Eagles have been on the win-loss seesaw for the whole month of February. After tonight's tilt they'll host Tulane on Tuesday, then play at East Carolina next weekend to wrap up the regular season.

At 10-3 in league play, Memphis is tied with UAB for second place in the C-USA standings. However, the Tigers had a five-game conference win streak snapped in Wednesday's 92-75 loss against Houston, which stopped an 11-game slide for the Cougars. The Tigers trail UTEP by two games with three to play.

Memphis has won the last 13 meetings with Southern Miss, including a 59-57 victory in Hattiesburg earlier this season. The Tigers lead the all-time series, 59-23.

Southern Miss nearly pulled off the upset of UTEP earlier this week, which consequently would have put Memphis just a game back of the Miners in the league standings. Josimar Avarza had a good look at a potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer, but his shot rimmed out and UTEP prevailed. The Golden Eagles held the Miners to 37 percent shooting from the floor, but they shot just 33.3 percent themselves. Still, they never stopped fighting, and nearly erased a 15-point deficit over the final eight minutes. Gary Flowers led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while R.L. Horton scored 11 and Angelo Johnson finished with 10. Flowers leads the team with 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per contest, while Johnson is netting 10.0 ppg. The Golden Eagles are holding opponents to 40.2 percent shooting from the floor and 59.4 ppg.

The Tigers defense was not so stout against Houston, as they allowed the Tigers to shoot 50 percent from the floor and put 92 points on the board. Memphis also committed 17 turnovers in the game, as they had dug themselves a 15-point hole by halftime. Wesley Witherspoon scored a team-high 18 points in the loss. Reserves Angel Garcia and Roburt Sallie scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Doneal Mack finished with 10. Elliot Williams leads the team with 18.6 ppg on the season, but he was held to just six points on 2-of-9 shooting, and he also committed a game-high five turnovers. Witherspoon is registering 12.6 ppg, while Sallie (10.9) and Mack (10.5) are also averaging double figures. As a team, the Tigers are shooting 45.7 percent from the floor and are averaging 76 ppg.

A C-USA regular-season title is a longshot for the Tigers, but you can expect them to pull out all the stops tonight at home. Expect Memphis to rebound with a strong effort following Wednesday's 17-point loss to Houston.
