GAME NOTES: Tennessee-Martin hopes to pull off the upset tonight as the Skyhawks travel to take on the Morehead State Eagles in an Ohio Valley Conference battle at the Johnson Arena.
Morehead State is coming off of a tremendous win on Thursday, as the Eagles put a halt to Murray State's 17-game winning streak with a 70-65 home victory. The triumph is the Eagles' fifth in their last seven contests.
Tennessee-Martin fell victim for the fifth straight time in Eastern Kentucky on Thursday night, 84-60. The loss saw the Skyhawks' conference record drop to a dismal 1-16, and 4-24 overall on the season.
Morehead State leads the all-time series between the teams, 25-13. The last matchup came back on December 3rd, where Morehead State took the road victory, 74-66, behind Kenneth Faried's double-double of 19 points and 18 rebounds.
Morehead State upended a red hot Murray State team, 70-65, on Thursday night. Steve Peterson led the Eagles with 16 points in the affair, while Faried recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds. Faried leads the team in scoring and rebounding on the season, averaging a double-double per contest of 16.9 ppg to go along with 13.2 rpg. Terrance Hill added 13 points in the impressive victory, while Demonte Harper dished out eight assists. The Eagles used the long ball to their advantage in the game, connecting on 10-of-15 three- pointers (66.6 percent). The team shoots 37.2 percent from beyond the arc on the season.
Tennessee-Martin fell handily at Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, 84-60. Benzor Simmons scored a game-high 25 points in the loss for the Skyhawks, including a career-high five three-pointers. Ron Spencer recorded a double-double on the night, scoring 12 points to go along with 11 rebounds. The defeat dropped the Skyhawks to 4-24 on the year, and a lackluster 1-16 in the conference. Benzor is the team's second-highest scorer on the season, netting 13.3 points per game. Marquis Weddle leads the way with 16.2 ppg, while Reuben Clayton nets 11.9 ppg. Tennessee-Martin has almost a 12-point differential in scoring margin on the season as its opponent drop an average of 76.2 ppg, while the Skyhawks manage just 64.3 ppg.
There is no doubting the momentum gained from Morehead State's win on Thursday over Murray State, and with Tennessee-Martin heading into town winless on the road, it's safe to expect an east victory for the Eagles tonight.
