GAME NOTES: The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Nebraska Cornhuskers are two of the worst teams in the Big 12 Conference, but one of them will earn a much-needed victory today.
Texas Tech has suffered four consecutive defeats to fall to 4-9 in conference action, overshadowing a solid 16-11 overall record. The Red Raiders were no match for Kansas State on Tuesday, as the home crowd sat through an 83-64 defeat. Now, the team takes its 3-7 record in true road games to Lincoln.
As for Nebraska, it has gone just 1-12 against league foes after winning 10 of 13 games against non-conference opponents. The Cornhuskers haven't won a game in the month of February, and they currently own a seven-game losing streak. On Wednesday, they fell to Iowa State in a 78-74 final.
Nebraska owns a 15-9 series lead over Texas Tech, which includes three straight wins over the Red Raiders.
John Roberson and Mike Singletary have both started all 27 games for Texas Tech this season, and the duo is tied for the team scoring lead with 14.7 ppg apiece. Roberson has handed out 141 assists, and he is shooting 41 percent from three-point range. David Tairu provides 10.4 ppg on 49.1 percent accuracy from behind the arc for the Red Raiders, who are being outscored by 8.0 ppg in league play. In the 19-point loss to Kansas State earlier this week, Tech connected on only 37.5 percent of its field goal attempts, including 2-of-15 from three-point range. Roberson tallied 15 points, while Nick Okorie added 13 points in the setback. Singletary was just 1-of-7 from the field.
The leading scorer for Nebraska this season is Ryan Anderson with 11.0 ppg on the strength of his 41.3 percent accuracy from three-point range. Anderson is also tops with 47 steals and a modest average of 4.8 rpg, but he is the only double-digit scorer on the roster. The Cornhuskers are generating 66.0 ppg while allowing 64.5 ppg to opponents. In the four-point loss to Iowa State last time out, Nebraska suffered a 36-29 rebounding disadvantage and a 25-11 deficit in points from the foul line. Christian Standhardinger poured in 25 points to go along with eight rebounds for the Cornhuskers, and Lance Jeter shot 7-of-10 from the field en route to 21 points. Jorge Brian Diaz contributed 12 points for Nebraska, which got just five points from its bench players on 1-of-11 shooting.
In a game that will likely be decided in the final minute, give a narrow edge to Nebraska based solely on the homecourt advantage.
