U-C-F (13-14) at Marshall (21-7)

GAME NOTES: The Marshall Thundering Herd will try to continue their winning ways when they welcome the UCF Knights to the Cam Henderson Center tonight for a Conference USA clash.

Since ending their season-long five-game losing streak earlier this month, the Thundering Herd have reeled off six straight wins. On Wednesday night, they went on the road and thumped Rice, 77-54. As of now Marshall would have the No. 4 seed in the C-USA Tournament.

Meanwhile, UCF has dropped its last two outings to drop below .500 at 13-14. The Knights were also in action on Wednesday night, as they fell to UAB in a 53-49 final. They have not scored more than 70 points in any of their last nine games.

These teams met in mid-January in Orlando, and Marshall claimed an 81-75 victory in that meeting. The Herd lead the all-time series, 5-4.

Trailing by two in the final 90 seconds against a tough UAB squad, the Knights committed a costly turnover which led to a momentum-changing dunk for the Blazers. It was an especially tough loss for the young Knights, who nearly battled back from a 13-point deficit, only to have their efforts washed away in the waning moments. Considering they shot just 32.1 percent from the floor, the fact that they were right there in the end was an accomplishment in and of itself. Isaac Sosa scored a team-high 15 points off the bench, while Keith Clanton racked up 13 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. The fact remains, over the last month and change, UCF's offense has gone flat. Sosa currently leads the team with 10.3 ppg, and that is largely due to his long-range abilities, as he is shooting 42.1 percent (59-of-140) from beyond the arc. A.J. Tyler is the only other Knight averaging double figures, and he is putting up 10.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest.

Marshall has a couple of stalwarts in the low post in Tyler Wilkerson and Hassan Whiteside,. Wilkerson leads the team with 13.6 ppg to go along with 6.8 rpg, while Whiteside is averaging 13.2 ppg and a team-best 8.9 rpg. Both are shooting better than 50 percent from the floor, and they get some additional offensive help from Shaquille Johnson (10.1 ppg) and Damier Pitts (10.0 ppg). Whiteside posted his 11th double-double of the year Wednesday night against Rice, scoring 19 points and tying a season-high with 17 rebounds. He also blocked four shots to set the C-USA record for blocks in a season at 146. Chris Lutz knocked down six three-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points for the Herd, who shot an impressive 10-of-25 (40 percent) from beyond the arc.

Marshall is peaking at the right time, and with Whiteside and Wilkerson patrolling the low post, buckets won't come easily for a UCF squad that has struggled to put points on the board.
